Email subscribers free gift or send them to download page?

Hi,
I have just set up a blog and I am building a list in the fashion niche.

I am trying to increase my opt-ins so I am offering a free gift (PDF OF 100 fashion tips). Would it be better to send this to them in the first email or have it direct them to a download page.

If I send them to a download page, how do I then get them back to the blog?

Cheers

If you got some technical skills, you can use your "download page" as a witty substitute for double opt-in, that's why I vote for this option.

The old fashioned way of "now click here to confirm" is old fashioned. On the other hand, people who click through to download your PDF really gave you their real e-mail address, now haven't they?

There you have it, double optin in disguise.

Do both. If you send them to a download page, make sure that each page of your ebook has a link back to your blog. Plus, email them every few days and lead them back to your blog that way.

I personally like the "direct download" if I was the prospect who's seeking valuable stuffs. However, if I was the website owner, I would so do the "download page".

Reason being is that, you will need a download page to make a sales funnel work -- which is really important in listbuilding. With a download page, you can place a $1 offer on the bottom of the download link, and make sure you direct them there with a eye-catch arrow, or texts.

So you can at least turn the freebie seekers into buyers (even it was only $1, at least it shows they have credit cards).

And on the download page of that $1 offer, put another higher valued product to offer, but offer them for only $10 -- MAKE SURE they are well-valued. So on and so on......

I think I'm off the topic now, but anyway -- look forward to see you succeed.

I actually like to twist things a bit. In the first email, I like to send people to a download page so I can tease the first email a bit and perhaps make an offer. Then in the second email, I'll put a link to a zip file with the PDF inside. Putting it in a zip file means that the browser won't just open the file in a browser window, it will start the download process even if the subscriber forgets or ignores the "right click and chose..." process.
