Registering Domain Name Misspellings

So I have registered all of the misspellings to my domain name and then I got curious. A lot of my biggest competitors haven't registered some of their domain name misspellings. If I redirected those directly to my site, which is a service with some similar aspects to theirs, but different in some aspects is that still considered domain squatting? Is it legal or illegal since I wont be generating revenue from ads and the site that they will be redirected to will be branded completely different and will not even resemble their websites or domain names.

Generally, yes, I think so. It's called "typo-squatting". (Can probably Google that term and learn more?)

This is a bad place to ask for and to take legal advice. Unless it happens to come from someone like Brian Kindsvater or Bob Silber, who are real lawyers, but even then I think it's understandably generalizations, usually not really "giving legal advice" per se.

  • I am going to stay away from it regardless...was just something I stumbled on to
