When have you failed as an internet marketer?

Dear all,

I've been in internet marketing since March 2009. Over the past several years I've tried a lot of things:
- Adsense websites
- Selling my own products
- Email marketing
- Affiliate marketing
- Doing Adwords management for clients
- PPV to Peerfly CPA offers
- Banner advertising
- Selling domain names
- Building websites for clients
- Doing SEO for myself and clients

After 3,5 years I'm still only earning $200-$250 per month in passive income (through Adsense. It's quite depressing. I still believe internet marketing is possible because I see friends/fellow internet marketers making a couple thousand each month, but somehow I can't get it done.

So, when have you failed as an internet marketer? When is it time to give up and start looking for another opporunity?

Best,
Stealth

You can't get it done because you never try sticking to something.

Trying to do too many things is a very common problem. You haven't failed, you've simply learnt that without going in depth into a particular business model you're unlikely to have much success.

Your problem is that you try to much other things. Just focus on one thing. You are saying that you earn $200 - $250 per month from your Google AdSense site(s). So why not just focus on the AdSense part? You must got some experience if you are getting some money per month on it.
Do some keyword research, find niches with medium/high search volume, medium/low competition, medium/high CPC, .ORG/.NET/.COM EMD free.

Just focus on the AdSense part and you'll be earning much too.

Thanks guys. I thought that maybe that was it.

I'm pretty good at writing but I noticed I live PPV/CPA better. I've spent $400 and earned $210 there, so my "education" isn't too expensive yet, but I haven't found many campaigns which continuously brought in money yet.

You'll get there mate. Just keep creating new campaigns, testing, tweaking, and adjusting your approach based on your experiences.

I don't know, you seems to try out a lot of stuff and only adsense is working for you... then why not do what is already proven to work?

You mentioned that you make $200 - $250 in passive income through adsense. The keyword here is passive income. Give yourself a pad on the back, you did great.. most people don't make money even after trying out IM for 5 years.

    Be grateful

If you mastered all those things you listed you'd be making a lot of money by now. Heck, if you mastered just one of them you'd be making a lot of money by now. I know we hear that taking action is the most important thing, but planning is much more important in the beginning. Go back to the drawing board.

Not to sound like a broken record, but you found success in Adsense. Your best move would be to ramp that up.

To diversify, you could explore the other programs similar to adsense that are not run by G. There are a few out there which would cover you should anything happen with your adsense account.

Hi Stealth17, this post really caught my attention and I would say never give up. Get help from a coach.

As for me it's all started when I attended my very first internet marketing (IM) training by Alex Mandossian on 27th March 2012.

Ohh yea... Its only 7 month since I embarked on my internet marketing journey. The BIG question is what I have achieved so far? What is my progress?

In the past 7 month I was so busy on the internet, writing and posting, and learning various aspects of internet marketing, generating traffic, list building, email marketing, affiliate marketing, social media, link building, creating products and the list goes on...

      The outcome...
      • Currently I am making $100 every month consistently from selling Clickbank products
      • My subscribers list have reached 700 people and its growing everyday

What do you think about my progress?

Personally I am happy with my progress because it's proven to me now, that I can make a passive income from internet marketing business.
If I can make $100 a month consistently then I am confident that I can make $1000 a month and $100,000 in the very near future.

Hereby I would like to declare my next goal...

To achieve $1000 earnings with my internet marketing business...

This target of $1000 will be my next milestone and I am all out to making it happen.

      What's next?

Recently I have joined Alex Jeffreys master mind group, a reputable internet marketer whom have coached many internet marketers to become successful internet millionaire. So far I am blown away with his coaching program and realized the mistakes I am making in my very own business.

It's time to ADJUST and CONTINUE to achieve my goal...

I'm going to document my journey on my personal blog garyganesan. com, I hope many people will follow my steps and achieve your goals also.

Please post your comments in my blog, I would love to hear from people in my situation. Let's do it!

It can be clearly seen why have you failed. It is because of lack of focus. Pick up one thing you like the best and FOCUS all your efforts to master it. Without mastering one thing you will fail. And if you master only one among all this you can make millions. I was a victim of information overload for 3 years and once I realized this secret I focused all my efforts on one thing and started moving ahead.

However, my advice to you if you wish to make few thousands online is to skip adsence and selling info products and focus purely on selling personalized coaching, that is what I do. People will pay you $500 to $1000 for your personal help in any topic you know through your coaching. This is where you can touch some serious profits online quickly even if you have very less traffic to your site and you are a newbie in your niche...

Its an easy viscous circle to get caught up in, if you're jumping around at lots of different areas within IM. The best step I ever took with regard to developing a focus and a plan was getting a coach.

The money spent was a great investment. The knowledge you have gained over the last few years can undoubtably be channeled in a positive direction. Mindset and action Stealth17; get that and you'll be on the road to success.

When I focused on using the internet to make money while avoiding human contact, I failed at everything. When I focused on making contact with offline businesses and providing a valuable online service to them, I succeeded.

And always remember: It's not as much about knowing what to do as it is doing what you know.

Stealth17, let me get a little more specific and see if I can offer something beyond what others have already said.

It's been said by many that you hop around to too many things and need to focus on one thing, which is true.

But in my opinion and from my experience, succeeding is not only about focus, but on the value you bring to others. A lot of online marketing techniques bring in a little money because someone happens to click on an affiliate link or adsense link, but there is no human contact and little if any real value that is provided to another person/business.

I strongly believe that the amount of money you make is going to be directly proportional to the amount of value you bring to others. (In a way you can monetize of course, not talking about pure charity here.)

So you've mentioned that you have done a couple things for yourself and other clients, and have one or two others in the list (like e-mail marketing) that could be a valuable service to clients.

My 2 cents: Focus on those where you can provide real value to others. Master them well, and provide excellent service. Then all you will need to add to this to have a true recipe for success is some skills on acquiring new clients to grow your business.

    Make sense? Helpful?

      Certainly helpful! Thanks Jarrod .

But not from AdSense, I think?
Nope, mostly selling products, so adding value.

I'm considering scaling up Adsense, writing articles myself and having others write (outsource) or using PPV. Judging by the other comments I think that both aren't exactly adding much value to other people. I know that's something important but somehow I lost sight of it.

And I have to be honest: I'm not really good at person-to-person contact or selling. That's why I focus mostly on Adsense and PPV, to minimize contact while doing what I'm good at.

I know selling is important and I have read a dozen books on it but writing a decent salespage is still challenge. I just can't seem to get it right each time. That's why creating products just isn't appealing to me.

In August I set up a new site and wrote 30 articles for it so it wasn't a thin site. Now I'm slowly building links to it but I'm seeing less than 20 visitors a month which is kinda depressing. I know it'll probably work out in the long run but short-term successes do inspire and motivate me, so that's the appeal of PPV.

I love being an entrepreneur but sometimes it's not easy not to have someone telling you what you should do next .

Sounds like you are making progress and that is what is important! Regarding the site you added 30 articles to... what keyword research did you do to decide what content you needed to add to that site in order to generate more traffic? If you haven't already, I would suggest using Google Keyword Tool and Google Trends to figure out what information people are already searching for in your niche. Then create evergreen content with those key phrases in the meta title and H1 tag of your page.

I personally had a case of the blah's because I had been blogging for years and not gaining much traction in regards to traffic. Most of the time I was just writing my random thoughts about my industry. Once I stopped and started thinking about the basics I realized my strategy was all wrong. I did keyword research and started adding more evergreen content to my site. Instead of writing about random things in my niche, I started answering questions that were commonly searched on the web. I also noticed a big boost in traffic when I wrote about hot industry topics that were being searched in the news so I started adding more of that type of content as well. It doubled my traffic numbers!

If you keep at it with your site, try to think about pulling people in to read what they already wanted. Don't just put content on the site and hope they bite. Also, really basic, but make sure your site is verified in Google Webmaster Tools and make sure to submit your sitemap. Small things, but they can make a difference! Good luck!

But not from AdSense, I think?

I think you need to decide whether to put your efforts into scaling up your AdSense model (which clearly produces income, at least), or to let that tick over and start afresh on something completely different, whether it's something you've tried before or not.

I started off with affiliate marketing (trying to sell ClickBank products and using what I thought was "article marketing"), did everything wrong that you can do wrong, and earned nothing for months. I went back and started again (trying to sell very different ClickBank products with what really is article marketing) and was very quickly successful. There's a lot of luck in it, too, you know? Don't pay too much heed to the people who say that you "make your own luck". I'm sure elements of that are true, sometimes, but there's always "extraneous luck" involved as well.

Don't assume that all those other things on your list "don't work". They do for some people. (You knew this already, I know ).

I found my best success online when I stuck to something and duplicated what worked. I made the most mistakes when buying training product after training product while chasing elusive get-rich-quick mirages. If adsense is making your money, duplicate what works!

(But...always, build a list too of responsive customers. Don't EVERY depend on a search engine to always deliver your traffic forever. That's scary...and not smart. I've tried it in the past and learned first hand...search engines aren't dependable )

First off a new mindset is needed. You lament the fact that you only make $200 or so a month yet that would be heaven for the great majority of people you see posting here every day. They are desperate to make their first dollar online or they are only make $10 a month. Yet you are talking about quitting!!

You however have already succeeded. You have won. You have conquered the biggest problem of all - you've gotten started and have started to see some consistent success.

All I'm suggesting is that your viewpoint can make a huge difference. You're coming at this from desperation when you don't need to (no matter how much you need to ramp up how quickly). Desperate people rarely make good decisions that will contribute to their long term success.

You KNOW some stuff that works (you have the proof - no theories) so now take it to the next level.

    Good luck.

    Mark

I have this believe that if a business can generate $10, then the same business can generate $100. All you have to do is multiply what made you $10 by 10.. I think its when one stop trying that's when they fail, that's my definition of failure...

I agree with the starter repliers in here.

Just doing a gazillion things half hearted will get you no where. .

But doing 1 thing full on hard core, you will see some sort of result.

FOCUS and taking action each day is key to making money online. FOCUS on just one or two things, and put your heart and soul into this, and do not sleep, go full on and you will see results.

I wouldn't consider it failing, but I've stopped doing a number of things. When I first started, I was doing the traditional build review websites and rank for keywords and made my income through being an Amazon affiliate. I've stopped building websites, and I sold my lot.

Although I still have a dozen review websites that still bring in revenue to this day that may not bring in as much as my other methods but I'm still proud to deposit those cheques into my bank since I worked my ass off to get them (and they run on complete auto-pilot)

As long as you are taking action, I really believe there is no such thing as failing. Just stay focused and moving forward and you'll eventually reach where you want to be.

It is time to head back to the drawing board. Go through every single method that you tried to implement, sort out the methods that you have made consistent profits, no matter how small it is. Focus on these areas, maybe 1-2 of them. No point spreading yourself too thin, doing to many things all at once. These kinds of posts are generally not easy to answer, simply because we don't have the whole picture. Most people don't make money in this business for the following reasons:

      1. No business plan.
      2. Suffer from new shiny object syndrome.
      3. They don't invest enough time and money to test out a campaign, whether it's article syndication, buying traffic, SEO techniques, JVs, etc.
      4. They don't do the proper market research to find out what exactly will make them money.
      5. They don't focus on selling and conversions; if you're not selling you're not making money. I see people spend endless hours on things that don't make them money.
      6. They don't understand the distribution channels of their market. I saw a guy try to go head on with mortgage companies on popular keywords and he got nuked. When he finally switched over to long-tail keywords and moved away from Adwords to other ad networks, he did much, much better.
      7. They don't track their traffic. Or just as bad, they don't try and improve their conversions.
      8. They don't take the skill set of writing sales copy seriously.
      9. And the #1 reason for people not making the kind of money they really want: mindset. Whether it's lack of maturity, treating their business like a hobby, making excuses, or lacking discipline, this one is #1.

Only you can decide on when to give up. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. It's a lot of hard work. It takes commitment, personal growth, stepping outside your comfort zone, and a lot of perseverance. The good news is that you ARE making some money.

So it's time to take a step back and see what's working and then focus on that. Success leaves a lot of clues and with the proper, focused research, you can really turn things around.

Probably because they already have the experience and know how to utilize project management in order to do those things and they most likely have some, if not all, of the major work out-sourced. But for someone just starting out or for someone like the OP who has "tried" a lot of different things, they have already proven they cannot juggle a bunch of things at once.

So for most people in the OP's situation, it's better for them to begin focusing on one thing at a time.

My question to you is how long have you stuck to just one of those techniques? I know you said you have been doing IM for a few years, but I'm wondering how long you have focused on just one of those things above and put all you had into it? That might be the issue.

Focus! Focus on becoming an expert at just one of those things, and then when you are rockin' at that, you can put another one in the mix. I hope that helps you out!

I've been full-time in IM since the late 90's... just before Google really got started. I can tell you I have had my share of "failures" along the way. Here's what I believe is the keys to success:

    1. Time management. Learn to be very strict with this. Most IM'ers simply waste too much time tinkering, looking things up, being distracted. If you master your time, you will increase your earnings exponentially.

    2. Learn as much as you can in as many IM niches as possible (SEO, CPA, Affiliate, Video Marketing, etc.). This will give you a broad knowledge base, and enable you to merge techniques from each modality into whatever you choose to ultimately pursue. Of course, you can't learn everything at once, and you never stop learning, so time management above comes into play here. A little time set aside everyday to learn is a wise decision.

    3. Focus on ONE or TWO things... that's it. Learn about Everything, focus on One thing.

    4. As Jim Rohn always said, "take MASSIVE action". When you decide to do something, do it "massively".

    5. Time Management... :-))

Adsense sucks. Try a different business model. If you were selling clickbank products (or better yet your own products) on those adsense sites I would suspect you would be making at least 10X more than you are now.

I've tried stuff for different amounts of times. Adsense is definitely the longest running item on the list. PPV is the newest. I tend to try something new, see that it isn't working, go back to what worked, get bored, try something new etc. Vicious circle .

If you keep at it with your site, try to think about pulling people in to read what they already wanted. Don't just put content on the site and hope they bite. Also, really basic, but make sure your site is verified in Google Webmaster Tools and make sure to submit your sitemap. Small things, but they can make a difference! Good luck!
I did my homework, but thank you for pointing it out. I always use Market Samurai for keyword research + SEO Competition and use the Keyword tool to see what I'm missing. So far that hasn't worked here. Maybe the site got hit by the Google EMD update.

I tried selling Clickbank products, but never got to sell much. The moment I switched to Adsense sites started generating money, however little. Yes, I know that 1 sale with $40 commission can easily generate way more than 50 clicks on Adsense, but somehow it didn't work for me.

To summarize all the lessons learned here:
      - Focus on 1 thing (possibly the thing you like)
      - Make sure it's scalable/it can be automated
      - Keep at it
      Sums it up?

  • Here is what I would recommend:

Focus on getting other people to generate traffic for you - User generated content and more importantly ----> affiliate traffic. You don't want to be doing ALL of the work.

So do you mean something like adding a forum to sites or having the possibility for people to easily add content (articles) to the site?

That is a good idea but better yet create your own product and pay affiliates awesome commissions every time they make a sale.

You can do seo all day long and never get the results you need - pretty hard to do it on your own - that is why you need affiliates working for you.

My clients certainly weren't losing money! In fact I managed to optimize campaigns quite a lot. I never left clients worse than before I met them.
