I was just wondering, can you actually copyright an idea? As in a wso concept? I mean, if I write "copyright" in my wso, does that mean that no-one else can use that idea in their wso's and make money from it? Or would that be against the law?

    You can't copyright an idea.

Kind of like saying, can I copyright toilet paper ... No. Anyone can make toilet paper if they want to. You can't infringe on someone's patent for their unique way they make toilet paper if they had one, but if you look through WSOs, you'll see just about a gazillion ways to sell any one idea in there.

Your products are copyrighted at the moment they are in fixed form. Words, images, and other intellectual property can be copyrighted; ideas can't.

But don't let that stop you from selling your product as a WSO or otherwise.

    All the best,
    Michael

No way you can copyright an idea. Just think, you have got an Idea. Would you be able to sell the idea copyright to anyone else?

You can definitely "protect" your idea and the US Patent Office would be a place you might like to start. You can get a trademark as well, making it easier for you to sue people who infringe.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

You can't copyright an idea, what you can copyright is your unique presentation of that idea. The exact words and phrases that you use. You automatically have the copyright anytime that you put your own unique thoughts to paper. The copyright statement and the symbol is basically a polite reminder to others not to plagiarize your work. However it is fair game to take a idea or concept and put your own unique spin to it in your own words.

Hope I made my thoughts easy to understand.

    Best,
    George

  • So it's ok to sort of rehash an idea and turn into your own product, using your own words? Even though it destroys the community on here?

Who said anything about rehash or reword? Do you actually think there's only one take on any given subject ... that only one person has something to teach in any niche?

Ideas cannot be patented, you need an actual product to do it.
