Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 on sale today only

I didn't see this mentioned yet looking through first three pages. Dragon Naturally Speaking is the Amazon Gold Box special for today. Regular price $70 - it's only $35 today! DNS is great for quick article writing. I have DNS 8 I believe and it works very well. I know it's been discussed here several times if you want to do a search for more opinions.

Here's the link to Amazon Gold Box (not affiliate) Amazon.com Gold Box: New Deals. Every Day.

do you mean the products crap? or the fact you missed the low price?, I haven't used this personally but I have heard rave reviews about it from pretty much all over the show.

What was bad about it? the part that worries me is how effect it is with understanding your voice after you train it, I wonder if you have to have really clear and precise voice?

      Thanks

As mentioned, you have to train it to your voice, but you can also let it 'read through' your outgoing email to get a feel for your style. Unless I'm speaking publicly, I tend to speak quickly and don't have the clearest R's and S's - but it worked well for me. Definitely not just a fad - it's been around and popular for years. Now one thing that did frustrate me a bit when I bought mine couple years ago was that I found I had to buy more RAM in order to use it and I think that may have cost more than what I paid for the software. So check requirements compared to what you have.

      Hey Christy,

Thanks for this info. I was wondering about the RAM requirements, and how effective the program really is.

I guess I'm going to have to invest in it sooner or later, and it looks like sooner to me.

Btw, if you have an affiliate link, by all means plaeas PM it to me. I'll use it.

If you have Vista, you can use the speech recognition program already installed. Same concept---train it to recognize your voice and you are good to go. It will write what you dictate. You have to dictate everything like 'period' and 'comma' and so forth but great for the price of free!

I agree -while Dragon is definitely the "Cadillac" of speech recognition programs I am very impressed by the built-in application in Windows Vista. In fact it's the one thing about Vista that actually impresses me, I have 2 Vista workstations and voice recognition is their primary function.

You do need to spend a few hours training it, which is also true of Dragon (we use Dragon at a company I consult to). It is affected by the quality of the microphone but is actually quite forgiving, I'm starting to use the Bluetooth hands-free microphone from my cell phone and it really works well (and lets me walk all over my apartment talking to my computer, confirming my neighbors suspicions regarding my sanity!).

This seems to be built into the Windows 7 Beta as well. If you have Vista (any version, even Home) and are on a budget check it out, one of my workstations only has 2 GB of RAM (practical minimum for Vista) and it works just fine.

If you're like Yumeryu who types faster than you speak, then this will be a pain to work with. But if your typing skills are not as good, then this would be a great option.

I used to use it, but soon realized that it would slow me down since I also type way faster than I talk.

Plus it was frustrating having to correct all the little misspellings, like when you say, "I had to go to the store today to buy eggs and milk." and the dumb program would type, "I had to go to the stork today to by eggs and milk."

Little things like that would get me frustrated. Little grammatical issues that a human knows the difference would be difficult for the program to know.

Words like know and no. To, Too, and Two. For and Four. All these words will cause problems because the program seems to randomly pick one of them when you're talking simply because it doesn't know which would be the correct word.

Anyway, that was my experience, but like I said, if you type slow, this is a very good alternative, but just make sure you're carefully reading as it types so you can catch these errors and fix them right away.

    Sincerely,

    Jaime Ojeda

You're welcome, Adam and Steve. Steve there's an option to get daily notifications of the GoldBox specials. Many I just delete, but there's been a few gems in there.

I had better luck with DNS than Vista's. But maybe that's just because I learned/trained Dragon first.
