3 Creative Ways To Generate Traffic Offline

Hey guys, here's a little part of an article that I've written. It's nothing mind blowing, but it's 3 methods that have worked amaizngly for me. Personally, I feel as though offline marketing for your website is underrated in general so while some of the tactics here are basic in theory, they've always worked and not enough people do them in my opinion. Nothing complex in theory, but hopefully they inspire a few ideas!

  • Actual Traffic. No matter where you live, I'm willing to bet that while driving, you've seen somebody holding a sign for a business. It's done commonly with pizzerias such as Little Caesars and your typical department stores will sometimes have one out there when they're having a great sale. The teenagers that hold these signs up and dance around with them are almost working for pennies, so what stops you from finding one and giving them the job? You could always post and ask on Craigslist with a price you deem fit and see if anybody bites. If you're in or a near a city, it's beyond worth the investment considering the thousands of people that will drive through every HOUR. It's important to make sure that your advertisement is catchy because if somebody sees a sign that has nothing but a URL on it, they're going to laugh. If you're not the most innovative person, nothing stops you from asking a friend or on forums! Who knows, a great description or catchy phrase for your advertisement may be right under your nose.
  • Flea Markets/Swap Meets. It's strange because I personally haven't seen this idea mentioned before but I think it's a great one. People love flea markets/swap meets and I've yet to see one that ISN'T crowded on an early weekend afternoon. Before I go further, this won't work well for certain niches. Think of why people GO to flea markets. If your website is about something like SEO or web design, the only expression you're likely to get is a confused one. On the opposite side of the spectrum, if your site is based on something like video games, clothes or any basic every day items, then you automatically have potential. The first thing to do is think of what is AT flea markets. Anything you see multiple times is a good traffic option by nature. Let me give you an example, say your website is selling video games using an affiliate program like Amazon Associates: you could politely ask any of the video game venders (and trust me, there's usually quite a few) if they'd let you put your business card/ad/etc on their table. Some will, some won't but a few dollars will always change that mind frame since it's no harm to them. Like I said, this REALLY depends on your niche but if you think about what's at flea markets/swap meets and how many people run through them, you might give your website an easy little push.
  • Business Cards. Now don't get me wrong, there's nothing "creative" and "unique" about business cards by nature. It's something that MANY people do and will always do but don't stop reading yet! There's creative ways you can go about getting your actual card out there. Okay, here's an example, let's say your website is movie related. You could go to a movie theater and put your business card on every car's windshield. Basic, huh? Think about it though, chances are that most people at the movie theater...enjoy movies. Some will throw the card out without even looking at it, some will look at it and forget about it but let's be honest, some people are BOUND to check it out. You're targeting certain people which is going to give you targeted traffic. This approach might seem a little vague but there's ENDLESS potential. Considering that 250 business cards are only $10, strategically placing them (as well as having a clean and professional look on them, of course) could really benefit you. Don't rush though, play it smart! If you see anybody going to their car, ASK them if they want a card. If they don't, then you're saving a card instead of posting it on the car that they're about to walk to.

I'm always amazed how many people ignore traditional offline marketing - I think it's mainly because they think it costs too much. But as many will find out, you often get what you pay for - especially in the IM world.

One to add to your list - Press Releases. Yes, the IM world have their own versions which may be good for SEO. Yet traditionally press releases can be hugely effective. You need to know how to do them properly - search Google for free guides etc. You may need to actually pick up the phone and speak to someone, which many IMs just don't like. However, they can be very rewarding and very cost effective - particularly for local media - local press in particular.
