Duplicate content - using echo with SMF?

Really keen to hear - does duplicate content give negative rank, eg I am keen to build social proof for my site, but as it is new just building the forum content is taking a while to build momentum.
There is a plugin for SMF (simple machine forums) which echo's other forum's posts, and newsgroups as well as replies from your site. Giving your site a lot more content, but it will be duplicate..
Will this harm my site? SEO aside, having more activity in the forum will develop the community but if it will hamstring my pagerank I maybe shouldn't do it..
I have a similar RSS reed to my blog, with relevant content, and that will keep people coming back to check out good news content, but if it is all duplicate does that penalise me?
I am still going to keep working hard to develop unique content, but the question will this do more harm than good?
