Share Your Old School Marketing Techniques

There are a lot of different ways people send traffic to their sites these days but a lot of people have forgotten about what has been working for years.

I thought this would be a good time to revive some of those old methods.

One method I still use is twitter. Over the last two years I have built a targeted following in my niche. I currently have just over 30,000 followers. Every time I make a blog post, I add the post title and link to twitter. This gives me anywhere from 200 to 1,000 visitors every time.

My followers also re-tweet the post, which brings in traffic. And I also end up getting a lot of facebook likes. I have a few social links on my site so people can just like the article with the push of a button.

Please feel free to share your old school marketing techniques that are still working for you.

I think blog comments have received a lot of bad publicity because of automated softwares that post 1,000's if not millions of comments all over the web. I think posting comments manually on relevant blogs is a good old seo strategy that works very well. They are working well for me anyways, I do them on a constant basis for my own websites. Posting on blogs that use disqus or keywordluv can improve the approval rate so that all your hard work pays off.

  • Forum marketing and building relationships. It worked 15 years ago and it still works now.

If you have offer a solid product or service, you dont need to buy tons of traffic. Just get the email, and build relationships then once you have built up your customer base, its all on tap from there.

Here are my list of old school marketing techniques that still works for me today

    1) Blog commenting
    2) Guest posting
    3) Ezine-article (not as effective as before though)

Old school marketing technique that I am NO longer using

    1) Distribution of flyers (offline though)
    2) Cold calling (trust me, this is tough but good training nonetheless)

Twitter has been around for a really long time, and many internet marketers I talk to, do not use them because they believe twitter is out of date.

I would not agree with this. Twitter is a great source of traffic if you know how to use it well and that means not spamming your followers with links or promotional tweets, building a good relationship with them, providing quality content (tweets) etc.

Many people have tried twitter, came to a conclusion it's not good and moved on when in fact it just takes a little more effort and the results will come.

Joe, this isn't aimed at you as an article marketer, but I just bring it up because you find it amusing that people say AM is dead.

Anyone on here who talks about a technique will always go into figures/conversion rates/opt ins, bla bla bla.

All except the article marketers who just repeat the same things that are in a 20 yr old article marketing book.

My spidey senses tell me article marketers don't give numbers is because they would have to make them up to cover their over exaggerations. There's been a few people who have given out numbers over the course of the time I've been here and if you put them together they equal FLUFF.

Just saying  (like I said, you're a newbie compared to most people and it's not directed at you because of such)

But I await the debate lol.

Dam you and your diplomatic ways.

I don't look at AM threads anymore because if I see the same thing written again I think I'll scream lol.

But being serious for a minute, it would be good to get some proper numbers. But as we already know, there's half a billion reasons why that would never work.

                      That should be good.

I doubt nobody thinks it works, and if they do they shouldn't be an internet marketer.

From my point of view I'm just curious about the numbers at the top of the line. I have a good idea from a few guest posts I've done and other people what it's like at the bottom of the line.

I like to think I'm top tier as a writer; but marketing leaves plenty of room for improvement at the moment. Realistic numbers that a newbie can look at and say "that's something I can aim for" would be much more beneficial compared to the -35723-48572340578-5923=-5u7 numbers that just invoke a "That'd be nice to reach someday" response (not to mention the obvious questions of authenticity that are bound to come up).
I don't mean money. I have no interest in knowing what people earn.

I just meant the numbers. I know what click-thru averages are from guest posts, then sign-ups, open rates etc.

I'm just curious about the numbers before and including the signup %.

                              Fair enough.

From a guest blogging point of view, people are getting posts on huge sites with 200K subscribers and getting a hundred clicks and no signups. And then even less from smaller blogs.

I got about 33% signups for one guest post, but a hundred clicks. I have another one coming up soon on a huge blog so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Numbers are slowly drying up, but to be honest I think it's because it's become the norm now and everyone expects it. It would be good to know if it's different for ezines because they've not been attacked so much from marketers.

I think the best thing these days is to get recommended. I doubt you'll be doing much article marketing if your Disney idea turns into what you think it will. You should definitely keep your options open. There's still things you can do to get lots of traffic without writing an article.

At the moment I'm just tweaking what I have into a good converting sales funnel, then eventually I'm going to start testing paid traffic. I don't think I want to get into the whole guest blogging thing, never mind article marketing.

I never got into this online marketing thing so I'd have to do work lol.

I don't know what TPW does, but I think it's wise that you're building something that can use more than one traffic technique.

Twitter is pretty much doing great for me. I don't rely on Facebook anymore because of the promoted posts rule and I think its a waste having your posts only show to a small number of fans. That's why I'm focusing on twitter which brings some food results.

I started email marketing in the late 1990's and still use it today. I don't use a lot of the flash in a pan "new" methods so many are hitting today. You will never see my list being offered for solo ads or ad swaps and there is a lot of discussion and numbers crunched before a jv is approved. I do have list members from 2001 and would still have some from 1997 if I were still in those niches.

I also use local newspapers as advertising mediums. For around $30 I can still reach 100,000 or more people with them.

That's SO funny! It seems to me that it's been around a very short time.

I've been in sales and marketing for 30 years and I remember my first sales trainer saying, "Remember, your territory is your own business. Run it like one."

Back then, as now, the old school ways of building a business around your customer list and relationships are those that will bring you the longest term benefits.

So how's that relate to web traffic? The best traffic for me is coming from leveraged relationships, whether they be JV partners, solos, ad swaps, customer referrals, etc.

My goal is to get targeted traffic and I think the best targeted traffic is warm traffic coming from a recommendation.

Great question to start a thread Brian!

Yes. It is old but it is still a golden technique to get traffic. To me the best way to get traffic is to add fresh and genuine content. No matter how much time Google changes their algorithm, it would never affect your overall traffic if your article is new and fresh.

      Old school marketing methods?

This is just my personal opinion, but I think one of the best is "word of mouth."

It still works today just as good as ever . . . maybe better.

In fact, when you look at social networking, isn't that a form of word of mouth advertising?

Sure, there are nuances to the social sites but when you boil them down to the bone, they succeed because folks like to talk to one another.

Even a site like Pinterest, IMHO, is a form of word of mouth advertising.
