Its know its going to be tough to get traffic in this competitive niche.

I am planning to start a blog on this domain, any ideas on how to compete in this competitive niche and come to the first page at least

Haven't you heard about Google's EMD updates?
This domain will not help you much, also looks spammy to me.

I would say forget about this niche unless you can match some of the Top 10 listing spending power. Or different approach other than SEO/PPC.

        They're still there, though.

I would just like to point out that you can't really put Amazon, Wal-Mart, Best Buy etc etc in to the EMD pool. Those are BRANDED websites, not EMD.

I am not saying that the "myth" is true, I am just saying that those sites can't really be used as examples of EMD.

at the end of the day J it comes down to the same old chestnut ... QUALITY.

Quality is kind and Google will always strive to kick poor quality out of its rankings. That's why good writers like yourself will always be in demand and always get good rates.

btw, love the birthday chinchillas site ... what an interesting niche!!

    All the best

    Jason
