      This actually makes me wonder...

I'm not on a lot of peoples list, pretty much
the big name marketers yet I get spam emails
everyday so it makes me wonder if any of them
      have sold my email address.

To be honest I don't see why they would do that
because they must know how valuable their
list is yet one of them must have sold it.

But then again I don't know much about the
whole spam scene. Maybe theres another way
for spammers to get your email address.

I really think they just put it on there to look proper. I know they have to be selling my information because even when I put fresh information, I still somehow get tons of 'emails'. I think it's crap anyhow. I signed up to join the site, not be sold to. Yes I know--the list. And I like a list too and don't have a problem selling to it, but selling my list to spammers?

But it could be they are getting the emails from some other means I suppose.

They didn't say whether they hated GIVING it, or GETTING it. My guess is they hate GETTING it just as much as you do... but they love giving it.

Of course some of them are lying.

However, you cannot assume that just because you get spam, that someone has given away/sold/rented your email address.

I have an email address I created in Yahoo a couple of months ago. It has a long, fairly random username. I have NEVER used it. It was going to be used for signing up for some spammy-looking things, but I am still using my old spam-catcher email addy - - I have addresses just for signing up for dicey stuff, which I eventually abandon - just haven't had to abandon this last one as soon as I thought.

Guess what? About a week ago I started getting spam messages to this random, unused Yahoo email address. Did Yahoo sell it to spammers? I doubt it.

I have another address for personal stuff that I have NEVER used for signing up for anything - just for chatting with friends. About a month ago I started to get "little blue pill" and "enlargement" spam there too. That address is from my ISP. So - how did the spammers get it?

I suspect that spammers troll/test all kinds of random addresses looking for live ones. I don't know the technical details, but I have suspicions.

So - before you condemn these people whose list you signed up for - they MAY have been truthful, and not given your address to anyone. You can get spam without signing up anywhere. It sounds unlikely, but I have at least two accounts that prove it.

      Best Regards, Georgetta

Maybe they just hate trying to open the can with that little metal key?:p

Seriously, though, if you actually read a lot of the so-called privacy policies (and I'm not talking about 'gurus' only), you'll find some weasel language about 'marketing partners' or such - a classic loophole.

For many big companies, list rental is one of their biggest cash cows. It's how mainstream magazines can offer you their books (retail $4.50) for under a buck with a subscription.

Good, well-targeted mailing lists of proven buyers can rent for upwards of a buck a name for one-time use. If you could get $50k+ every time you rented your 50,000 name mailing list, how many 'marketing partners' and 'sister companies' would you have?

Awhile back, a rep from a publisher tried to sell me a subscription over the phone. I told him that with the money they were going to make renting my name and address, they should pay me to take the magazine. He laughed, and we settled on a free subscription for a year...

    Hi Steve:

They may hate spam as much as you and I but only if it comes their way. It is interesting how a few free sign-ups can lead to a lot of trash to be emptied on a given day.

    Have a great Sunday!

How you know that your list publisher sold your email?

    - Your email can be crawled by bots from web sites by spammers
    - When you sent an email to your friend and your friend computer has a spyware, it will send you spam
    - Sometime our email will be just picked up by spammers during email traffic.

If nothing above is a possibility, use a specific and fresh email address for a list and see that publisher sending spam to it.
