How would you approach this? Urgent help needed!

I have a friend who's in a band with an imminent album release on a major record label. They're currently doing the rounds of all the TV shows and radio appearances. So, I got in touch to see if they'd be interested in me as their 'internet guy.' They currently have no mailing list setup and just a standard website with some music and few pictures.

He got back to me and told me to cook up a proposal and take it to their label. I'd be primarily setting them up with a mailing list and taking care of their emails and broadcasts and general marketing stuff. Maybe set them up with a facebook page which will help get people onto their funnel.

So, this is a pretty big opportunity for me. So, I'd love your help in 'pitching' this to their label. So any advice you could give me would be great! The best way to convince them of the power of the mailing list etc etc.

I'll be writing up a proposal today but any pointers you guys could give me would be awesome.

Thanks,

Tom

I would recommend that you get spend a few times with the band and ask them what they want to achieve. That way you can write the proposal based on their "own words."

Generally speaking, I spend at least 2 to 3 actual points of contact with a prospective client understanding their needs before pitching a proposal.

I got better results that way and the pitch is no longer a pitch, but rather an action plan to achieve their desired results.

You and your client will be on the same team of solving their problems, instead of you as the pitch man getting a sale.

If you've already spent a good amount of time with your client and what they want, you'll know how to position your offer.

Look forward to hear your success story.

Man that's tough... I don't even know if they would even bother seeing you. They would see you as just some kid the band knows looking for a job. They probably have their own "internet" people that do this kind of stuff. So if you go in there showing your cards they might just take your ideas and tell you "no thanks we got someone who handles that".

It's worth a shot, but your pitch has got to be pretty damn impressive. Good luck.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Though I'm considering going in and saying I'll work for free, on the proviso that they use me for their other acts after they see results. I think getting the foot in the door with a company like this is the hard part, so maybe going in free, would be the way to go.

With your friend i think you have got an upper hand if you make a good proposal.

I suggest you get in touch with a few people who have done this before and rub minds with them.

It can easily give you a headstart and also be careful with how much information you give them.

It's workable especially since you first suggested it to them.

As you have mentioned that this is not your site. So it would be best if you discuss with them about all the stuff. It's a music sites. I also did this type of job long time ago. I helped them in such a way that they can earn money also. People love their songs. They do not like to release a album in the market. They upload their latest song in their sites. There are lots of fans who just pay a monthly subscription fee to them and can enjoy or download their song.

So, it would be better fro you to sit with them and listen what they want before starting.

Something seems off here. If your guys are signed with a "major" label there should be someone there handling their Web presence. Companies that invest heavily in speculative ventures like new bands don't often leave things like this to chance.

But if that's the way it really is I'd look at a dozen or so similar sites for similar artists and come up with something that fits the market while being new and fresh. It would also help if you had an impressive portfolio. Good luck.

Oddly enough, it does seem to be so with major record labels. They're very much behind the times when it comes to internet marketing. That's why I'm excited about this. It could be a chance to really change things.
