There are some good lists above and it certainly is worth targeting them when you get around to it (you can find more by using the Google adwords tool and targeting keywords related to similar services like web design, marketing consultants, email marketing, ecommerce etc etc).

Now you probably already know this...

But if you rely on business owners to be search around online for services, find you, contact you and hire you you could have a long wait.

Your best prospects simply don't have the time or inclination to be searching online.

The quickest way to get hired is to go talk to business owners.

You can start with the business owners you know and the business owners your friends know.

Kindest regards,
Andrew Cavanagh

Check out some of the top national competitors in the industry...scrape their keywords, add your own local modifiers to them and then check out search volume.

Take a look at Google Insights as well, you can easily drill down geographically.

Andrew,
Thanks for the input, i am already doing that, but i figured, good free search traffic with page 1 google rankings couldnt hurt, and i have a video campaign already put together for Opt in Small business. I figure for a couple 3 hrs of work or so and dominating some keyword searchs would just add more fuel on top of the Machine. Thanks all your input i always appreciate it, you my friend consistently go above and beyond in regards to post responses.

Hey Robert - I started to do this myself as an extra as yes - great to get free organic traffic calls in addition to all the 'offline tactics' used...

I used "websitemarketing local city name" "websitemarketingcompany local city name" in addition to the great ones above by Mark.

Still haven't gotten around to loading up WP on them, seo optimizing etc. as so busy with servicing the existing offline clients i got ...but will soon!

Also - you probably are doing this - contact local 'photographers' and 'website design' companies in your area to JV / form an alliance / affiliate as I find that they always get asked about website marketing services/seo that most of them don't do and would love a 15% referral fee as extra cash and vice versa - I hired a local photographer to help with an offline client so we refer each other out to our clients and prospects....

Launching soon with HUGE affiliate commissions - Social Marketing Certification - Join the Guild - here's the Sales Page - Our Pilot to 100 Marketers Completed with RAVE REVIEWS!

It is worth doing both to get or increase your experience with local SEO and as a follow up tool or example you can use with the clients and prospects you speak with.

But as you know the danger is in thinking that you'll get a significant number of clients this way.

You certainly can get lucky but if you want to make an exceptional income in this niche you really want to be more active about getting out and talking to business owners and approaching them proactively in person, by mail, by phone etc.

The good news is you don't need a website to get hired or much of anything except the willingness to talk to business owners and help them make more sales and profits with their internet marketing.

Kindest regards,
Andrew

Robert, is your clientele already online? I wonder if you might better reach them through the newspaper, seminars, Chamber of Commerce networking, etc.

Ha Ha Frank, thanks i love it, i know Russell is here, but they dont focus on that kind of thing much, at least to my knowledge. I may be way off here though. So far have had no trouble rounding up Monster Clients here locally. Thanks for the input though, i always appreciate when fellow warriors look out for me, and i try to do vice versa.
Thanks again

Robert,

I have to agree with Maria big time. When you ask the customers that contact you the all important question that you always have to ask - "how did you hear about our company?", and they say "I searched Google", you have to love it! It's a bluebird deal that can really make a difference sometimes.

As usual, Andrew's right on - the vast majority of your clients will come from face-to-face marketing. Don't forget that. But when those occasional calls come in out of the blue, that turn into good sized deals, it's party time. And all from doing some basic, localized SEO work on your site one time!

Gotta love this biz.

Mark

Hi Robert,

Awesome to hear you're killing it in the offline gold niche! To answer your keyword ideas question I would start with high paying keywords on Google adwords. Why? Because these are LOCAL businesses ALREADY SPENDING money to get traffic. Here's an example below...

The best way to find clients through organic search is to get ranked for their vertical market (flower shops, etc.). Doing a quick search myself using Google's keyword tool I first start with the keyword Boise (no quotes) Obviously the Boise keyword is broad with 3.3 mil. monthly searches but there's some other gems. Examples I found include...

Boise Motel
12,100 searches monthly
PPC cost: $4.35

boise classified
2,400 searches monthly
PPC cost: $.58

Example above is you could get ranked organically for boise motel and go back to those advertisers (motels presumably) and offer them a classified ad or even a banner for a premium at 1/2 the cost of their PPC spend. In this case being over $4 bucks a click.

Why target the keyword boise classifieds? This is where you could put up a local classified listing page and get some traffic from that to whatever market you're targeting.

This could be an entire business model alone targeting these local businesses that again, ARE SPENDING money online to get traffic. You get ranked locally for HIGH COST keywords and you go back to these people basically offering cheaper advertising for 1st page ranking.

No time to do this or doesn't fit your existing business model? Just hire a 100% commission sales rep by running an ad on Craigslist and offer really nice payouts for bringing you clients that are interested. Then YOU close them!

This business model is beautiful as any clients that you land will be VERY open to spending huge dollars on their online marketing. They're already spending PPC locally anyway. They're ripe for all of your backend SEO services, etc. and they're half sold already! You don't have to spend time "educating" them on SEO as they're not complete novices.

Also, you're basically competing with Google locally BUT you can service these clients face to face. You just say to the client "why continue to pay for Google Adwords when I'm here to help you? You cannot call Google for help!" This is a great closer when talking to the client face to face and it works!

Circling back to your question about more keywords. I would start with the keyword boise and drill down from there. I saw a lot of great keywords with high PPC costs that target the usual local brick and mortar businesses.

I think us offline gold folks sometimes think like IMer's and just focus on the long tail KW's with decent search and hammer that. This is NOT needed in local markets as you can get ranked with what I call "top dog" highly searched keywords and compete immediately. You obviously have social proof as you now have sites in all these markets ranked very high locally.

Any questions from you Robert or anyone else please PM me. I'd be glad to offer more input.

Good luck and do keep us posted on your local KW hunt!

Regards,
Dennis

Don't even think about it.

Robert:

Don't reinvent the wheel.

Go check out localbizbuilders.com forum, then look for the Front Door Pages hosted by the man himself, Vince Runza. Vince is all over this, with some ideas that you should consider.

As Andrew says, you should STILL go talk to business owners. It is fun. Most businesses don't have a clue...I still struggle with how to communicate to business owners the importance of using important keywords to build web pages around...they just don't get it...

Anyway, go see Vince.

-Mike D.

P.S. And find a local leads group to join. I just joined one last month. The St. Patrick's Day pizza party was fun! And talk with business owners....did I say already it was fun?

I know I'm a little late to this thread, but I wanted to reinforce what a lot of people already said here.

It's a great idea to enhance your offline consulting business by receiving leads from searches for "xx Boise Idaho" if it's for pure lead generation. If it's credentials you're worried about, point out some of the high ranking websites you currently own (assuming you have them) with business owners who you're meeting with (if they ask), and explain the search results.

What gets a lot of business owners on the "client list" for me is when I show them one of my higher ranking websites on the front page of a 40 million result keyword phrase search, look at them and ask them to imagine what I can do with their market followed by our city after showing them results of much lower numbers. This is just one of the ways, obviously, but it's viable and it works.

Now obviously, being able to claim that I also own the front page of many seo related my city searches is very powerful as well - but you can start off with the above method and establish credibility just fine.

I would also copy and paste the keywords above that Mark posted as they are great keywords to start ranking for immediately. You can move forward with others as you start seeing yourself ranking for these mainstream searches.

Best of luck to you, it sounds like you're already off to a great start and I don't think Russel's got anything on ya.

Kindest,
John Dennis

Depending on what business you intend to do, your keywords should be direct and precise. Not forgetting that you should include them in your articles or writeup for reviews or reports.

Since you are targetting local market in Boise and Idaho business then using these keywords will definitely be of great use for articles.

- Boise website search design in Idaho
- Boise web hosting in Idaho
- Boise Internet marketing in Idaho
- Boise web design in Idaho
and so forth

Starting keywords with emphasis on Boise as first keyword will help your business in search engines.
