Offline Direct Mail Technique that caught my attention

Hi All,

Dont know if this is really worth a post but I thought it might be worth something to someone!

As I'm sure many of you are, I am on the lists of many biz opp companies, and I recieved a mail shot the other day that caught my attention straight away. I actually remember getting in from work and thinking 'Huh, I wonder what this is'.

Simply because they had used burgundy envelopes with a silver address letter. A very simple technique but it caught my attention, and I'm sure it makes x amount of more people open the letter, y amount more read it and z amount invest.

worth thinking about.

Anyway hope this is a useful post and not just my useless ramblings!

All the best

Jack

Hi Gina, it was from a British offline marketer called Tim Lowe, and he was offering the opportunity to sell various products he has the rights for exclusively, as an equal partner. Sounded like a fairly good opportunity to be honest. But he was asking for a buy in of £8000. Bit too much for me at the moment!

I love retail goldmine BTW. I aim to get involved in offline marketing within the next few months, so its a bit of a privilege to hear from an offline veteran!

I received a shiny gold envelope once, and I opened it right away! It just made me feel so good to hold it, I wanted to see what was inside. It was from John Childers.

Was the burgundy a matte color, or shiny? I'm imagining a shiny color, that looks like a present - because that's what the gold letter I received was - but I'm wondering if the one that caught your attention was similar?

There really is unlimited "eye catchers" that you can use.

ANYTHING that is out of the norm will increase your chances of getting your piece opened up.

I use a simple Size #0 brown 3m bubble mailer. Its extremely lightweight and dirt cheap if you buy it at the right place.

      Hi Sheila,

It was actually a dark red colour, so more matte that shiny I'm afraid! It was quite professional looking, but at the same time not dissimilar to an envelope you would get with a birthday card.

However the address label, which must be what, 5 cm by 2cm was black font printed on shiny silver.

The hardest thing in direct mail is getting your letter opened, so the few extra dollars you spend on color/lumpy mail/first class postage etc are nearly always returned to you in spades.

Can't say I've ever seen a burgundy letter and I'm sure I would have opened it.

Just got a shiny red evelope the other day and thought, "hey good marketing tool". Checked at Stapels they don't have any, but they said try one of the big craft store chains or party chains. Planning to get some.

Sending letters to businesses for offline consulting has always been a viable way to tap into the market. You'll be much more successful with this technique if you can identify ways to have your letter opened more often than not, and more often than the next letter in the pile.

There's been a few posts in the last month pointing out some ideas such as sending barf bags with the tag, "Does your current website make you want to throw up?" Although I do not know the turn out of this particular method, it's always best to try separating yourself from the rest as it's effect can even bring you here to the Warrior forums to post about it.

    Kindest,

Whatever colors you are using, be sure to check with your local post if they charge extra for odd color envelopes.

The reason is that the sorting machines may mistook the odd colors as text and give more jobs to the manual staff, passing that cost TO YOUR PROSPECT.

While it may be rare, it's better to double-check.
