Video Editor? sony sucks 10 hrs to render 30 min

Hi, I'm hoping that some of you may have some knowledge of a video editor that cost lest than Camtasia $300 program? All I need is something to add some titles, transitions and overlays. I"ve tried Sony 11 but when it cam to rendering a 720 hdv it took over 10 Hours! And that was just to render a 30 minute video. There is something seriously wrong with that program design. I'm using and i7 too! Wow, I was shocked. The procesor is only being told to use 15% of it's capacity, so sony really screwed up on this one imo. Any other editors that you have had experience with ?
Thanks
John

I agree that Sony Vegas can be pretty slow rendering videos.

I haven't tried it, but Power Director claims it's the fastest at rendering videos. It has a free trial for various version you may want to check out...Not sure what the free trials include?

      USE THIS SOFTWARE!

Its what I use and I LOVE power director. They do not lie when they say its fast. Not only is it fast, but its so easy to make hi quality videos with. Soon as they're done, power director lets you upload them straight to youtube or facebook.

I only wish people would recommend this software more often. Marketers need fast, easy, quality software, and power director is precisely that.

As much as I recommend this software, I think its time I become an affiliate for them..

ps. If you guys don't want to download the trials, realize you can just watch people using the software on youtube. That will give you a nice glimpse at how it works.

pss. About the actual speed. A 5 minute video, will generally take 30 seconds to render to avi.
Or about 10 mins to render into mpeg4. The basic ratio for power director is this:

For avis: About 1/10th the length of the video to render.
For mpeg4: About 2-3 times the length of the video to render.

And thats for high def, lower quality rendering is obviously a lot faster.

Seriously, something isn't making sense, I just tried power director. Remember this is a very basic 80 mb avi file I'm editing and rendering, with very little effects added, just transitions and text. My output is a basic hd 1280x720 mp4. the same output that camtasia puts out without increasing the size very much. Power Director is trying to turn this into a 2.5 GB file which is just crazy. Nobody in their mind would consider downloading a 2.5 gb video off the internet. I'm really not understanding at all, how camtasia can do this job so easy, with NO issues, and all these other editors have major size issues like 10 to 20 time size increases from avi to mp4. Power Director is not fast for me, this thing is at least 2 hours and counting.
Am I doing some thing wrong?

It's just not making sense to me. I'm using an i7, a simple avi 80 mb import with little editing enhancements. I've checked all the settings in power director and they are very limited imo. I can't even change the quality, it shows me the settings but they cannot be edited. Power Director has nice editing features, (though it lacks callouts) and seems to run stable. For me it's just simply unusable due to file output size, same as Sony. It's not fast either for me, with that size of out put file the time is well over 2 hours and counting. Am I doing something wrong?

Look, something IS definitely wrong. I can tell you that for a fact. The problem is, I can't tell you whats wrong right this minute.

We may need to troubleshoot this in a bit more in depth. I'm rendering 150mb avis in less than 1 minute. Then mpeg4s are taking me about 10-15 minutes.

Whats even CRAZIER, is you're using an I7, I'm using a simple intel core 2 duo. Its the fastest core 2 duo on the market, but its still nothing compared to an I7.

          ---------

Ok I just reread what you wrote. There is definitely something going on. Power director should NOT, I repeat **NOT** be converting the file into a "2.5gb" file! Give me one second, I'm going to open up power director and see if I can figure out what you're doing wrong.

          I'll be right back.

          ---------

edit: Look man I'm lost. I know a lot about computers, but this seems to be 1 of those situations where we are both overlooking something very simple/stupid.

Different computers obviously behave differently, but that does NOT explain in anyway what is happening in your case.

This is what I would do if I was you. I'd convert everything to a PDS file format in power director. Add all the files and the pds into a zip, then upload it to media share or something similar.

I will open your file on my SLOWER pc, open camtasia, and RECORD myself burning your video (with powerdirector), in less than 15 mins, at the highest quality format. I am doing the same exact thing you're doing, in only 15 minutes like I said. If I were to burn that avi straight into a new avi, it takes less than 1 minute. So something is definitely being overlooked here.

ps. You can change the quality, but I'm assuming if you're using a trial version, that some features are locked. Either way, all I know is power director has NEVER been that slow for me. Even if I'm burning an hour long file, it will NOT convert it to a 2.5gb file. No way, never. Maybe something is wrong with your graphics/media drivers, but that still doesn't explain the file size.

Hmm, which format do you think works best for importing into PD? Would import a mov file be better than an avi?. I was actually liking PD until it came to the rendering part.

Well I just did a test. I put the same two avi videos in Power Editor and Camtasia. They were about 500 mb imported. The same settings for rendering 1280x720 mp4.
              1. Camtasia took about 30 min and produced a 175 mb video.
              2. Power director took 1 hour and 12 minutes, and produced a 1.5 GB video. I also did the same two avi videos in
              3. Wondershare, (which could not produce a 1280x720) it took about 30 minutes and produced a 560 MB video 7xx X 5xx.
I'm not sure how Power director manages to be as fast as they claim but for me it's the slowest of the 3.
Probably something I'm doing wrong, but that's a mystery to me.
thanks for all of your help on this everyone.
I wish power director could render like Camtasia, because it's a nice program and much cheaper.

Sony just got done rendering a 30 minute movie that was imported at 80 mbs, and by the time Sony got done rendering it, 11 hours later, is was a gigantic 1.5 gb. How they sell this type of poor performance is beyond my reasoning. Needless to say I'll be exploring other solutions and update this thread when I find a good one. BTW ConverterLite is an amazing little program just for reformating video files, fast and easy.

10 hours is a long time. I do videos that are about
1 hour long and it never takes that long to render.
But these videos are for DVD format. So maybe
the format makes that huge difference. Of course
you need a fast computer with a couple gigs of
RAM to cut down on this time.

I agree completely. I have been using power director for 5 years now (currently using pd10) and I love everything about pd except their rendering. I upgraded to 10 because of how fast they say they are -- but in the words of Joe Biden -- (VP of the U.S) it's a bunch of Malarky.

For me -- it could some times takes over a half hour to upload a 5 minute video, and I do have a fairly fast Internet connection with 8gb of ram running

I have camtasia and powerdirector. Power Director is made for videos shot on an hd camera and focused on created a quality file as quickly as possible. Camtasia is for screen capture videos, that's what it does best.

How you make Power Director faster is by tweaking the video setting. They tell you how large the file will be before you make it, so you need to go into the video setting and choose custom settings. Once you play around with it you'll find setting that you like that give you good quality.

The most important factor is "bit rate".

In Power Director you may see a bit rate in the default setting at 25000 Kbs (kilobytes per second). This is probably what's causing your large file size.

In camtasia, I usually have my bit rate set at 800 Kbs, which will make your file a lot smaller.

Click the the "pen" icon in Power Director when you're choosing your video output format under "custom".

Then click on the video tab to change the bit rate.

I hope this helps God Bless.

I use Sony Vegas to render my videos.

I have been quite inefficent with the whole process I feel!

What I do now to speed it up when recording with my own HD Camera is to record in DV and not HD and render it in the same .mpg format as it was originally in and it is quick and the file size is quite compact as well.

I don't have Camtasia but use CamStudio which is free screencapture software.

When I add that to render in Sony Vegas it usually takes quite a bit longer for me as I try to render in a HD setting to make it as sharpe as possible. I have not properly investigated the most efficent way of doing that though.

Sony vegas fan here. I have used a couple of software but none was as good as sony vegas in terms of ease of use and how quickly i could work on a project.

Rendering times? Well i don't mind the time that it takes. Because i usually create only short videos.

    here are some suggestions:

Try to reduce the resolution, 480 is fine. This will drastically reduce the time.

Ah yes, we do not like sony vegas. I have a quad core. Also, a boat load of memory. There is a dedicated machine for renders. Like this program requires max power. However, I have used other programs. Basically, it is more of the same. Think 720p is slow, then try 1080p which is the new standard now. That one runs slower than ever. Yeah, and the files are massive in size.

Sony makes a nice looking video, I'll say that, but they are behind the times in rendering. Video's are the hottest thing in the market right now, you'd think they'd make rendering a little more practical at Sony, so one wouldn't need a dedicated rendering computer just to deal with the turtle render times. If your movie doesn't need editing camstudio w converterLite makes a great free combination for mp4 generation.
