Sending out Opt-in Emails

My company has a launch coming up, and over the years I have compiled a 20,000 person mailing list from various sources. Is it legal for me to send an email out to that list asking them to sign up for my mailing list? I am not trying to sell them anything, I am simply asking if they would like more information.

Any advice?

It depends on how old the list is. If you have not contacted them for a while they may have forgotten you. But be easy on the first few emails to see how your responds is, but I would say it is ok to use the list.

    Hello Op,

Actually, unsolicited emails to anyone without them opting in first is technically considered spam from my understanding. In fact, a lot of offline marketers will sometimes call a prospect first and ask permission to email!!

This is why you cannot import lists into email marketing programs generally unless they are coming from existing databases where it's assumed those people elected to be on your list (like LinkedIn, etc.).

That said, what you are talking about doing is done every day on a much larger scale than you are planning and there are a lot of times no problems.

If you are going to do this, you must make sure you are CAN SPAM compliant - which is relatively simple - except for the part you are skipping (getting their permission first :0). The two main things to make sure you have would be your contact/address info in the email, as well as a clear option for the receiver to be taken off of your list.
