Clarification needed for Domain Name and Hosting

Hello,
I have a friend in Canada and I am helping him set an online business. He wants to register the domain while I have agreed to pay for his hosting every month. What I wanted to know was

1. If the website were to land in some kind of problem. Would I be held responsible or would he be responsible for the website? In this case, who would be the owner of the website. Since I am helping him in this case, I will be only paying the hosting fee.

I would appreciate your guidance in this matter.

Thanks,
Dan

If you are the contact person for the hosting domain name then it will likely be your responsibility for all the problems.

If you are not the contact person then you may not be responsible. I did that for a friend but he uses his info for the registration. Legally, it is his domain name and site. I am just paying on behalf.

I think he would be the one in trouble but I have no legal background nor any experience in this, just thinking logically.

For example, if you are paying for a gun or for a drug addict to purchase drug and he is caught with them, the offences are still his, although you have moral responsibility to not fund these kinds of purchases before hand.

If you want to avoid responsibility or blame altogether, why don't you transfer the money to his paypal or something? Transfer an annual hosting fee each time, make him pay the bills himself.
