pulling my hair off... traffic that doesn't convert

Hello guys,

This thread is just to share what I'm going through.

I convinced a guy to send me traffic by putting my ad on his site as an affiliate. That Ad sends me 120+ visitors everyday.

The visitors go directly to the sales page (that's how CLICKBANK affiliation works!), which is very long (20 pages on ms word).

My regular visitors convert at a 2.8% rate. (2.8 of visitors of the sales page, buy). They come from Google, Getresponse, and guest posts.

But this traffic!!! NO ONE BUYS!!!

I don't know if you have been through this (did you?). It's VERY frustrating. I should note that this is the first time I receive this much traffic.

So I'm in kind of a dilemma... it's like I'm losing face with my partner (as I told him about my conversion rate).

YET, if this keeps up, he probably will take off the banner AD... which would be a shame. (if you know what it's like to find partners, you know how hard it is to find someone who is willing to "test" your product, when he doesn't know you).

Please share your experiences/ thoughts/ feedback.

Inhale... exhale... I'm all good.

    Is that targeted traffic?
If, yes you should review yous sale funnel.

Because Google traffic is kind of warmed up traffic. What I mean by that is people coming to your site through Google want to find that type of product.

But, if your ad doesn't laser target you might get a lot of traffic, but with a very low conversion rate.

In my experience I like warmed my traffic before sending them to any sale page.
That way I narrow down the traffic, and keep only the best.

    Good luck for the rest

I think this isnt a targetted traffic
maybe you have a different niche than the website where you added your banner

    Hi Paul

I just wanted to let you know that, although the vast majoirty of CB vendors do indeed use a sales letter as the target for the hoplink, that is NOT how Clickbank works. You can actually send your CB visitors to any page on your site (that is within the CB TOS) via the hoplink.

Personally, I am using a sign-up page that gives people access to a ton of free stuff. That gets people into my a/r sequence and then, the pre-selling begins.

    Will

EDIT: Forgot to add - you can see from my pic just how much hair I have pulled out over the years

Thank you guys for the support. A couple of things to add to this:

    - The audience is VERY similar to my buyers. But, they're not warmed up to buy at all. They come from a general entertainment/social sharing site.

    - CB hoplinks don't have to go to the sales page. But, I believe most CB affiliates won't link to you if the hoplink doesn't go to the sales page. I might be wrong.
With people I know well, I set up a 90-day cookie system and they can send visitor ANYWHERE on the site... when that visitor decides to buy, the sales page would have put a CB link that has my partner as the affiliate... but try to explain that to people you're just getting to know ;-) (I might be wrong, I only have one year of experience)

Thank again, sniperdomi, Karim, and Will.

I think your best bet is first talking to the guy and let him know what's been going on. Tell him that you think it's possibly because the traffic isn't warmed up, and then, OFFER to warm it up for him.

You can say that since he's sending you traffic, you'll go the extra mile to create a squeeze page and collect leads and follow up with them through autoresponder emails to warm them up to buy.

Make it clear to him that:
      1. Affiliate cookies are set for at least 60 days on CB, so he would still be credited for the sale.

      2. You will use HIS affiliate link in your autoresponders. Emphasize this, and emphasize this again in your message to him.

This 2nd point is easy to implement. Not sure which AR company you're using, but you can do this with a custom field that stores his affiliate ID. Let me know if you want me to help you set that up :-)

If he's someone who understands business, he'd be happy to hear all this.

      Hope this helps!

It may very well just be garbage traffic. Do you know what country it's coming from?

If the niche is similar to your own. Ask them if you can have a guest post on the front page to warm people up. Then if they go through the link they are half expecting to be sold to. Or as suggested above send them to a squeeze page first and collect their email. Just change your banner so it shows a free report instead. Then use your AR to give them value and then send through to the offer.

Maybe these visitors aren't big readers. Try sending them to a page with a video instead of 20 PAGES! of text.

How does the banner match up to the landing page? Is it clear about what they are going to see/get when they click?

Have you thought about creating your own squeeze page and send the traffic there, capture there emails and name then follow them up with some auto responders regarding the clickbank offer

That way you can market to them again and again until they unsubscribe, take time with your list and auto responses and you should be able to convert the visits

    Good luck!

    • I would definitely try split-testing with another sales pages, just for these visitors. Less text than 20 pages in word, perhaps a video, more images. Just create a second sales page, try a different version. Then start the split-testing every day to get the conversion rate up. Each audience can be a bit different. Split-testing is the name of the game- can be tedious, but incredibly necessary!

        That's a good point.

I think that since they're coming from as social site, so they may expect a different form of content when they clickthrough to your site. I guess something that holds their attention, and that requires less investment in terms of time - that is, they don't have to spend a long time seeing your page.

        Hope that makes sense.

Try sending targeted visitors to the page of that desire , if you are not sure of the traffic received... then try to put up with a squeez page just before they visit the affliate link such that you could build a list...

    Happy Selling...

Since you haven't provided enough info to comment intelligently it's got to come down to two very basic things. The traffic isn't targeted and/or the sales page (long sales pages are not a problem if they're well written) and/or the offer sucks.
