Scammers and cybercriminals are everywhere. We, netizens, should be vigilant and cautious on what we do online. That's the only way for us not to become victims of these ill-willed people.

I read somewhere Facebook themselves are cracking down on these shady practices. Exploiting emotions for profit is a dirty business

Yup, as soon as one gets shut down, 10 more spring up.

It's like the war on drugs - FaceBook (in this case) will never win. It's just too profitable for the spammers to stop.

totally agree with you... I just read some more articles on this topic and I think facebook will not be able to stop it... lets see how it goes.

It seems very true. One way to find out about this is to look at the number of "likes" and the number of people "talking about this". If the number varies, means likes are fishy

Who cares if businesses put up funny pictures to get more likes? They aren't CYBERCRIMINALS! LOL It isn't against the law or anything... don't 'like' stuff unless you want to 'like' it, do you need Facebook to babysit you while you are online?

No, but it's still against the TOS. You don't "own" a facebook page, facebook does. You can't just sell it.

So Facebook should ban them or remove it from their TOS. This isn't even newsworthy. Most companies deal with this stuff (or don't) without it being in the news.

You aren't a cybercriminal for breaking TOS. Thats freaking hilarious!

And sure you can sell your facebook, myspace, or any other account like that. Sure its not 'allowed' and sure nobody really 'owns' it but you just send them the log in info, they change the password, tada!

I am pretty sure you can't change the name of your facebook page like this anyways so I think this is a SCAM article.

I have to agree with this.. the term "cyber criminals" makes it more extreme than what it is..

So what if people post funny pictures and get likes? People like attention.. What else is new.

This is totally false or extremely exaggerated. Facebook would easily fnd and ban these accounts right off the bat. And even after 30 days facebook makes your phone verify your account before they delete it.

It just simply would not work, and I know that for a fact. Any type of botting or suspicious activity gets deleted fast

    twitter sure, but not facebook

I don,t think Face Book is able to identify bots / fake profiles that fast..

This is true and I have personally witnessed it being done firsthand on a number of popular websites...Hopefully the "higher ups" in facebook will take action on this before it gets too out of hand (figure out a way to stomp out the problem on their end if possible)

Well, the story in the article just talks about "link bait"- a tactic that has been in use on the Internet long before facebook. Using enticing text or images to goad people into clicking.

Certainly emails saying "Click here to see [name of celebrity] naked before they are taken down!" pre-date facebook.

The article doesn't even mention that you don't need to run this "scam". You can just buy 20,000 likes on fiverr.

I feel bad that all these people who bought those fake facebook likes are going to get cheated. Heard a rumor that facebook is putting out an allout effort to remove inactive accounts (about 3 billion of them) out of business... making all those fake likes disappear. Maybe then people will really understand that facebook marketing is about engagement and relationship building, not how many likes you have...

I doubt facebook will be able to do it,.... fake account holders are getting more clever than facebook itself... they wouldnt have a full controlled strategy to identify fake accounts,, at the end of the day,, if the worst come to worst on fake account holders, FB will ask for phone verification and these days Free Pa As You Go sim cards are available every where...

I use auto likes to promote my websites on fb. I do it very subtly so fb will never find it. I don't try to get hundreds per day, just 10 or so per day per site is sufficient. It's fully automated and it works. They are real users so I really don't think fb will be deleting them.

Also, it's not about how many likes I have. It's about having 10 fresh links on fb for fresh eyes to see every day.

What can be done now by facebook?
Leave all those accounts which are already created. Make an identity verification process for each new account that will be created in near future. Make a 2 step login process which can be optional for account safety.
