Changing Brands AND Domain

Hey guys ---

I have a real offline company that I run. Of course I do SEO for it, and use wordpress to build and create content. Now, I have a great site, and I've been building a ton of links, both whitehat through web directories and partner sites, as well as greyhat with link emperor. I'm ranking pretty well for a few pages.

Now the problem....

We recently split with our business partners in another state and need to change our brand. This will include a complete rebranding, including changing the domain name.

Any advice? Any professional companies I can outsource the domain and redirect part to? Thanks you guys... I know this is a big project...

Nate

You just want to redirect traffic from your old site to your new one?

Don't hire a company to do that. Seriously- it should take less than 5 minutes.

Whoever you registered your your domain through (Go Daddy, Hostgator, whatever) should be able to help you redirect it with to your new domain.

If you're talking about using the same website but a different domain name, that's different but still not extremely difficult- your hosting company can probably help with that.

    Hi,

The biggest question is, will you be retaining control of the "old" domain or do your partners get it?

If you have it, then smile because things will go smoothly with the proper planning and redirects! (don't have a hosting company do the 301's, you need it to be extremely thorough)

It sounds like the partners have the domain. If that's the case, you can't redirect the traffic, unless they agree to do so. You would have to buy a new domain and move the site to new domain and start over with traffic and backlinks.

Hey guys --- the partners DO NOT have the domain . We have a seperate domain... http://www.companyname-boston.com so we can do the redirects.

Thanks for the help. Any other info about switching domains and keeping link juice will be helpful.

By the way, I checked if the domain we want for our new site was available. It wasn't. I inquired with the site owner (who has a temporary page saying the domain is for sale)... they said $80,000!

    My reply: LOL!

    Push a redirect with a 301.

Make sure you know what you're doing, and if not - get help.

Yes it is easy, but if you screw it up ....
