Should I add content to my home page?

I know that this may sound like a stupid question, but since I’m already ranking OK for my targeted keyword terms such as free article directories and other related phrases, I’m a bit hesitant to add content to my home page.

I haven’t been trying to rank for very long and the website is still very new so I think I’ve done OK so far without the addition of any content, but I was wondering if I add content to the page maybe it might negatively affect my rankings in some unforeseen way.

Am I just overreacting or should I have done this a long time ago? I just like to keep my home page clean looking. Any thoughts?

For instance, should I write a high quality 750 word article and place it on the home page?

If your site is "somewhat new" then you might be experiencing the "google dance" which means it will rank you high in the beginning because you have a lot of activity happening but then will slowly move you back down after your activity levels out. I am pretty sure I have explained that correctly but I am sure if I missed something or didn't explain it correctly one of the many experts on here will help me out

As for adding more content on to your homepage there are 3 essential rules with content on websites:

    1) Content is KING
    2) Always post good original content
    3) If in doubt refer to rules 1 and 2

    Just my 2 cents

    Good Luck

  • Trade4861,

As long as you are adding good content there is nothing to worry about. Try not to think of your site in terms of a whole when it comes to ranking. Search engines return relevant documents not relevant websites. Each page on your website must be ranked on its own. If you have other pages already ranking then adding content to your home page (even if its no good) will not affect the other pages that make up your website.

This thread of SEOMoz has some interesting comments about ranking inner and home pages of a website.

How do you think your clean looking home page would look with a 750 word article on it?

The more you try to appease Google, the more likely you're going to get burned. The best SEO strategy nowadays is to forget about SEO!

In my point of view, you may update new content to your home page. I don't know which page on your website is ranking well. However, if you add fresh content, and relevant with target keywords that you are ranked well, you may add. Content is just a factor for Google to rank your site. So, don't be hesitant with this problem.

depends, is your focus solo ad traffic, Social traffic, banner traffic from another site?

then all you need is a nice hook, a video telling why they should opt in and your auto responder.

if you are looking to rank then write useful information around your keyword.

at the end of the day you should be doing both. Write great valuable posts with a big fat 300 pixel width widget area with a video telling ppl to opt it and your opt-in box below that sucker. waalaa, best of both worlds!

If you're doing it for SEO and to build relationships with your visitors, yes. If it's a landing page with a clean design that converts which you use to drive paid traffic to, no.

If your homepage is ranking well now for the keyword you're aiming for don't bother adding new content to it. Create new pages and start working on your inbound links instead.

    Hi,

As the old saying goes... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Leave it as it is for now and just monitor it. If you see it start to drop, then take action.

    Hope this helps

Haha, I always say the same thing, but curiosity always gets the best of me.

I think I might side on adding content to the home page as an experiment. Plus, the website is just an experiment to begin with, not something I planed on profiting on as I have other website that already profit.

My intentions of adding content to the homepage was to try and capitalize on additional phrases or words people might use to find my site, not just the few keyword phrases I am targeting. As it is, I only have a few keywords on my homepage that even relate to my subject so maybe the addition of content might do me good.

I have experimented with adding good content to inner pages that target my audience and done great in rankings for those pages, but my best backlinks point to my homepage so it would make the most sense to me to add content to my homepage.

Now I guess I just have to write the best essay ever written and see how it goes.

In my opinion, if your home page is ranking well, i think you should leave it that way. Don't bother putting up content on there.

It's not just about whether your homepage ranks well.

Do your search engine visitors actually do anything useful? Do they click ads / affiliate links, go through to another page of the site - whatever your main goal is for a visitor?

If you're getting the traffic, I'd concentrate on optimizing that first.
