Wordpress pros: very easy to set up and many add-ons that you can use for it can make a great site quickly.
cons:Sometimes can be overkill for very small sites however. Needs constant updates of add-ons and core system.

Site Developers: pros and cons.. This really depends on the developer. Some custom sites look truly awesome with great features but some are no better than wordpress. One of the biggest pros would be that you can customize it with your product or service.

I'd say take the time to learn WordPress. There are loads of plugins and themes already available and many of them are free. If you need something more customized you can pay a designer or developer to make some changes to the WordPress site or create a plugin for you.
If you think you can't get the type of site you need from WordPress then look at option 2. The cost of developers varies on what country they are from, but you can find them on sites like Odesk.

Well you dont say what kind of site you want. If its something basic go with wordpress. If its a highly customized membership site or needs tons of dynamic functionality youll need a developer.

For example you could make most any 'info' site with WP. but you wouldnt start with WP for a Facebook clone.

Host wordpress under your own domain name (not the free one).

Pros: Easy and simple. Lots of priceless Plug-ins that will help you tremendously along the way.

Cons: Constant updates of plug-ins and risk of getting your site hacked (Hackers love to target wp blogs - as long as you've strong password and plug-ins, It won't be a problem).

I think you have more flexibility with Web Developer over Word Press, the plus to Word Press is its easy to use for non-technical users.
