Keyword Research Is The Key
I recently used a keyword tool to find a longtail phrase for a test. Longtails are keyword phrases consisting of multiple words, like "how to train a dog" as opposed to a non-longtail version, like "dog training." Longtails are very important because if you find some that don't have a lot of competition, you can quickly rank in the search engines for those phrases.
Which brings me to the point of this thread. I found a particularly good longtail with not much competition and wrote an article, which I then submitted to EzineArticles a few days ago. In that article, I used the longtail phrase at the beginning of the article's title, then I used it a few times in the body of the article. I didn't shoot for any particular % of keyword density or anything that complicated. I just tried to work the phrase into the article where it seemed natural.
Now, here's the exciting part... that article sits in the #1 ranking position at Yahoo right now when you search for that longtail phrase. I literally did nothing other than find that keyword, write a nice article featuring a few instances of it, and submit it to one article directory. It was the best directory, but the point is I didn't spend a lot of time on this from start to finish.
To be sure, that one longtail phrase isn't going to bring a lot of traffic to my site, but I hope the point is clear. Find longtails without a lot of competition, write content around them, and get that content out there! It's a cumulative effect. Do one per day and after a couple weeks you will see a nice upward trend in traffic to your site. It really can be that simple. But you have to work smart. Get a good keyword research tool and then be relentless. I use Micro Niche Finder, but it's about $100. If you don't have that kind of money yet to throw into something, use the Google External Keyword Tool (free) or Wordtracker (not sure how much, but cheaper than $100).
It's an easy formula:
1). Locate longtail keywords that don't have many competing pages
2). Write articles for each longtail - use the keyword at the beginning of your title, then a few times in the article body.
3). Submit the article to EZA (use another one if you must, but I highly recommend going with EZA - they're the best by far).
4). Repeat Steps 1-3... a lot.
Good luck,
John
