Guest Blogging Question

I have just started a blog to support my SEO for a specialist hydration website I'm launching and have asked for guest bloggers to write articles. One offer from a blogger is for a blog that is very much related to what we do and I really like the idea of it and it should contain a lot of my keywords. The only thing that is niggling me is that she is asking for a clean backlink to her website, which has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm doing (it is a financial website, claiming ppi back to be specific). I have no problem with linking back to websites that I think are of value for my visitors but I'm not sure how to approach this from the blog page. It would be clear that she is a guest blogger, so I'm pretty sure that that takes me out of the relevance question - but my question is how do the search engines rate a backlink that has no relevance.

My gut instinct is to stay away from her offer - although at the early stage of my development as a website I could do with the content - and stick to "subject only" backlinks.

What's the professional view on this?

If it were me I would stay away from it or ask here to change the link to something more relevant. On an older site it may not matter as much but for a new site you really wouldn't want the content jumping to many different niches, if so it may look more like a spam site.

      Yes...you're 100% correct.

If someone agrees to guest post for you,, then you need to ensure the linkback is going to be to a site that is somehow relevant to your niche or site.

Otherwise, any readers on your blog that might click one of those links, and end up on some irrelevant site, are not going to be happy with YOU, and may never come back to your blog

Very, very badly. Relevance is the primary determinant of linkjuice, for Google anyway, and I strongly suspect for many other search engines, too (can't prove that last bit, though!). It was even before those all those "updates" over the last 2/3 years, and that's all the more true, now.

And this is the "additional point", here (though I fully agree with what the guys have said, above, too): a backlink from you isn't going to help her, anyway. But (like many), she doesn't quite appreciate that.

Probably the opposite , because the "professional view" tends to be supplied by people selling backlinking services, and they like "their market" to imagine that there's value in random backlinks even from non-relevant sites. :p You independent, Cornish types know better, though.

^ Good call. I bet 3 years ago there'd almost be no question about it, but nowadays bit time no. I wonder if it's the same with linking in social.

Brilliant! Thanks everyone for your input. I did think as much but temptation nearly got the better of me. I’m really thankful that I can come to this forum and get some guidance and I really do appreciate everyone who took the time to answer my question.

Keep it legit and on topic, if people see random subjects that intervene with their interests, than they may be less likely to come back.

yeah that link is not really relevant to your site, unless you have a financial category and have her link in there. Or an advertising section and have her pay for her link.
