Setting up a Youtube clone

Hi guys,

How difficult is it to create a website such as Youtube, but on a much smaller scale? A site where users upload videos, that allows commenting and perhaps even rating (scale 1-10).

The website would be quite modest and would hold 1000 videos max, so nothing compared to the scale of Youtube.

What about bandwidth? Am I right in assuming that a basic hosting account with say, NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-, would not suffice?

Thanks guys!

Its fairly easy..you can find youtube clone script online for a decent price or you can use wordpress. They have a plugin were you can turn any wordpress site into a youtube clone. As far as bandwidth, your definitely not gonna be able to use a basic hosting account..the hosting is whats gonna be the bulk of your overhead!! Search google for a nice script and price some hosting

    Hi Bassosa,
What sort of volume of traffic are you aiming at having?

You said that you'd like something much smaller than Youtube, up to 1000 videos Max.
You'd have to think about what amount of revenue you're planning on generating with this venture.

I find that trying to work with a "Cap" (1000 videos) may not work that well. It's a low limit.
To keep your site going, people will need to be allowed to keep adding new videos, otherwise: No new Content = Drop in Activity = Drop in Revenues

Also, to keep an interested community, there cannot be so few a number of videos to choose from (except if you website is VERY niche specific).

      Fair points.

Monetizing the site is an issue as it needs to generate adequate revenue to be able to pay for the hosting. So simply installing Adsense is (probably) not going to cut it.

As it is a site where people add videos and then check back to see their progress/rating I would imagine that there would be heaps of repeat visits. But even with 1000 videos, how may uniques is it going to generate. Probably not really that many..all things considered.

I will need to find out what to expect in terms of overheads before I do anything.

One thing that I do know is that a service like this is really wanted in that particular niche.

Good to know however that the technical side of the site should be relatively straightforward.

I have experience in working with Server Intensive sites, similar to your idea. It's true that monetizing such a venture is not easy.

I own a Social Network with +50,000 members, Server costs can really be a problem.
Then when you have a decent amount of traffic coming in to such a site, the Database get clustered quickly. That causes a strain on the servers.

Lack of sufficient RAM may end up being your biggest problem, rather than Bandwidth.

If this is a REALLY Serious Project for you, that is, you plan to go far with this for years to come; Then I suggest that you prepare to host your own servers locally.

You can start things off by paying for a Dedicated Server from Hostgator or G-Daddy, but don't expect that to be sustainable for long-term.
It's not easy for your revenues to cover your expenses for those types of sites.

Sites like Facebook, Youtube and other Social/Video Networks are profitable since they maintain their own servers locally, which cuts costs drastically as the site expands.

The smaller Social Networks that continue to run on paid severs often collapse and die out after a while.

It's pretty easy. But be prepared to shell out some cash for some dedicated servers. It's not gonna be cheap. Especially if you start getting lots of traffic.

Don't think your gonna be able to host that on shared server. I know. Because I once hosted a youtube clone on a shared server and it crashed with 500 Unique daily visitors a day within the first week it was online.

I had to unfortunately shut it down due to lack of money for the dedicated servers.

Would it be feasible to just start up the site using cheap hosting and just go with the flow and upgrade when necessary?

I don't have enough trust in the project to invest big but I still would like to at least give it a start. See how (and if) it develops.

Is it possible to scale up hosting without any interruption to the site?

Why has no one mentioned using AWS for this? I would go to Amazon Web Services if you plan on doing this and don't want the hassle, they can scale infinitely for great pricing.

    Hi

There many, many video sharing sites like YouTube with user generated content. dailymotion.com is an example of a big one.

Break is another: Funny Videos, Funny Clips & Funny Pictures | Break.com

You could niche down to a site dedicated to a particular genre or type of video at first. Like MMA Videos, Extreme Sports, Funny Wedding Videos, is Cat Videos too obvious? LOL

Anything where you know there are tons of videos and an audience.

    Hi Bassosa:

It sounds as an awesome journey. Problem is that videos gobble up bandwidth like crazy. That will cost you. Expect to discover a simple truth that most used car sales men are now working at hosting companies. They will boot you off as soon as you start getting a little traffic and you will find out that they are great at promising. However, they cannot deliver what is necessary. Good luck to you.

    First of all the hosting will not say "NO NO NO" if you tell them what you want to do and pay them accordingly with your needs ;
    If all the videos are just a few GB you don't have to tell the hosting company about them;
And second you can do this very easy and quick with wordpress: install wordpress on your site, install "All in One Video Pack" plugin and your good to go. Of course there are many other solutions out there but I'm giving you a very simple one.
For hosting you can try bluehost, they offer unlimited storage, unlimited domains, quick instalation for lots of open source solution like wordpress, phpbb, magento, oscommerce, unlimited email adresses etc. for 9,99$/month.
