Social Networking Platform suggestions wanted

I am planning on launching a branded social networking site for communities. Something like a ning where there will be many subset communities under the master brand site. # of members for each community would be 20-500 or so. Could eventually be 1000's of social communities.

I'm not real experienced so looking at a wordpress/buddypress or a phpfox etc...

Anyone have feedback on those two or add any others?

I'm looking to take action and get up and running quick and dirty, as proof of concept works, can get into some custom stuff if need be down the line.

Thanks in advance!

This sounds like a great idea. It would help businesses feel like they can create an online presence without feeling like they are spamming people.

exactly, it's about creating interaction and collaboration, hopefully "sticky".

I agree that wordpress would probably make for a good CMS to work with, plus the fact that it's so popular means plenty of plugins and designers who might be able to lend you a hand.

Are there any features that will make your service stand out from the likes of Ning?

I think it would interesting that your new platform had a lot of interaction (via plugins) with the main social networks,(Facebook...)

Yes, it would be free to users, and throwing in some secret sauce features to monetize. A mashup of sorts making it more of a portal of social networking and group deals.

It would be wonderful. I would like to tell you that you should and you need to go for WordPress. Because this is only one option where you would get all the things you need.
