Is exclusivity a good approach at gaining traction to a new website. I'm wondering if it will make people more eager to join a site if it is invite only.

Sure it will scrape off the top any chance of getting self driven sign ups.
But I'm curious to see what you guys thing. I'm only a newbie and it's just a thought.

This is a commonly used strategy of many online marketers and it certainly works, but there still needs to be a very good reason for people to join your site.

Ofcourse exclusivity/invite only would make more people want to sign-up to your website as it gives people a feeling of "rareness".

In my opinion having an invites only websites means raising the stakes high. The service/content you provide inside must be damn good or very original.

Maybe you should first test on a beta group to see if they are willing to recommend it.

See for example Google+ - was invites only, but many expected too much from it, and now are disappointing that is just another social network...
On the other hand see Pinterest - was invites only but was an original idea and succeeded.

It'll work very well on products that are more consumer-oriented than in a B2B space
