Default What are the precautions that need to be taken while writing an ebook related to Health?

Hello Folks,
I know currently there are a number of ebooks on health and wellness. Most of these ebooks are not even written by experts of the field.

Now if an average Joe were to write an ebook on bruxism and have a disclaimer in the sales page as well as the ebook that it is just an information product and that the readers should consult with their physician and as an author I assume no responsibilities for any health complications, would that suffice?

What is the proper procedure in place in terms of disclaimers to avoid any kind of legal hassles down the line?

Please advise.

It might be worth the money to buy a pretty "big name" product in the health market to see what kind of disclaimers they're putting inside their products. You could reword theirs and use it as your own, knowing that they almost certainly had theirs written by lawyers...

I'm not a lawyer and this is not legal advice, bla bla bla

Have a lawyer write the disclaimer. Make sure you provide him or her with the details of your eBook and the type of content and all that sort of thing. You really want something tailored for your content and your needs.

Isn't worth a couple hundred dollars for peace of mind, rather than copying someone else's disclaimer and hoping for the best? Besides, with someone else, you don't know what kind of research went into the content. You don't know whether or not they had medical professionals take a look at it and give it a pass, or suggest how things might be described or worded to avoid problems, all of which may weigh into the final language put into the disclaimer.

Also, you can also look at buying an insurance policy on your content for an additional layer of protection.

Hi Dan,
You have always provided great advise. Just curious, how would buying an insurance policy on content be helpful? Also what kind of attorney would you recommend for these kind of transactions? Please advise.

Thanks,
Dan

There is insurance available for Internet content providers. It'll usually be called something like intellectual property insurance.

Think of it like accident insurance. If you're in an accident, you're covered by your insurance policy. This website insurance works similarly.

What you want to find is an intellectual property attorney--someone who is familiar with websites, eBooks and other digital content and the necessary disclaimers.
