Need database for weightloss site...

Hi,

I am building out a niche weightloss site and need a database that contains nutritional information for foods. The idea is that the user can input that they ate a hamburger for lunch, and then the system will tell them how many calories, fat, protein, carbs, etc. was in that food.

Can anyone recommend (in this thread or via PM) a good way to source this?

In addition, if anyone here has experience creating something like this, I'd love to speak with you, as I am looking for someone to do development.

Thanks!

    OH...wow.

I am in the process of researching the market share on weight loss.

There are already online calculators that do this. I came accross them while researching and creating the market share maps.

There is also a reseller program from a manufactor in California that has the hand help calculators for weightloss and diabetics.

I can go back through my links and find them for you if your interested.

Oh...and I think the calculators are open source...most of them are anyway.

I imagine there are programs and databases that do this. The problem is that it's not simple to calculate the nutritional value of something like a "hamburger."

Was the meat 20% fat, 10% or 3% fat? Was the burger 3, 4 or 8 ounces and was that before or after cooking? How big and thick was the bun? How much mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard? Was there bacon? You see what I mean?

Even something as simple as say an omelet can get tricky. 2 or 3 eggs, small or jumbo, ham and cheese or just veggies, cooked in butter or nonfat spray?

The US Government to the rescue (wow, that's not heard often enough!).

I'll let you Google it, but there's a HUGE database of nutritional info available for downloading. It's in multiple files so you'll have to import it into an actual database, but you could probably get someone on RentACoder to do that for you for a few bucks.

Start at Nutrition.gov and see where that takes you. I downloaded it all a few years ago for a specific project.

Good find, Jay. I thought I'd seen something like this before. If folks are interested, I will throw a free, MySQL version together when I get the opportunity this week.
