Understanding EPCs - Earnings Per Click (here after referred to as EPCs) are the performance numbers the marketing industry is driven by.

Whether you are a product owner attempting to attract good affiliates or an affiliate looking for profitable offers to promote it is essential you understand how to calculate these numbers and how others may manipulate them.

Fortunately, the maths required is very basic and can be explained with a few simple examples.

Let’s assume you sell an ebook online. You have driven 1,000 clicks to the sales page, which had a conversion rate of 5% meaning you sold 50 copies at $30. EPC = Copies sold x Price / clicks = 50 x $30 / 1,000 = $1,500 / 1,000 = $1.50

That means you earned $1.50 for every click you sent to the site.

This is the first way that product owners mislead their affiliates. If the product owner earns $1.50 for every click he sends to the site, even if an affiliate had an identical traffic source, he still wouldn’t earn the same amount unless the product owner paid 100% commission (not very common).

So you don't think a copywriter needs a thorough understanding of EPCs? Interesting.

Flag it if you feel so strongly about it. Get the Mods to move it. No skin off my nose.

Of course copywriters need to understand EPC. And PPC. And offline marketing. And self-improvement. And social media. And a multitude of other marketing topics.

The reason this forum has sub forums is because there are so many different topics.

          What, is EPC special?

Who cares where it's posted at? Are we running out of room?

Why get picky if the poster is always posting interesting stuff...then posts 1 post you're not interested in? You can always move on to a critique.

I found it interesting...and can fully understand how it relates to this section.

Where is the "negative thanks" button. This comment adds no value whatsoever. Glad someone else checked it.

Alex is right though. Should be in the Main Discussion Forum. Although we're all guilty at times placing threads in here which really should be elsewhere.

Unfortunately, though for the benefit of the copywriters here, if it is moved elsewhere other copywriters here probably wouldn't see it. And since this is the target audience in this case...

          ???

Online copywriters who understand EPC have an advantage over those who only deal with whether their copy 'converts'.

    "My copy coverts at 3%"--BFD.

"My offer has an EPC of $1.25 on JV traffic"--Now we got something to talk about.

EPC is also valuable because it aggregates all the pieces of the offer including the one-time offers.

Things get serious when the word EPC is mentioned.

For instance, if you've written an offer than converts copywise and you're trying to scrounge up some some JV list traffic to test against it, saying your offer converts at 10% won't mean a thing to a potential JV. They'll ignore you.

What will matter is if you say I have an offer that has an EPC of $1.10. Now the guy knows how much he's going to make based upon the size and responsiveness of his list. It sums things up quickly for the JV or for the guy driving cold traffic.

The upshot is for the copywriter, if you want to impress other copywriters, go ahead and brag about your conversion rate. If you're talking to a guy building lists or doing media buys, talk about your EPC. You'll earn almost instant respect in the process.

This guide is one of the best things given to this community - for free.

It's easily worth $97. If you read it and understand it - don't just glance - you will have major advantage in this space.

I can count (literally) $xx,xxx extra that came my way as a result of applying the intrinsic understanding of these metrics.

It's always life affirming when something you've written gets reposted on a popular forum ...

and all anyone comments on is the choice of which sub-forum it was put in.

Now all we need is for someone to say "What's that doing here - should be over in the Copy Forum" :p
