You have to pick up a narrow niche, unless you have plenty of money to grow your site.
The widder the niche, the deeper your pocket has to be, before you even see a dollar back.
There's no point in building an authority blog on an all-encompassing range of subjects.
You don't want to compete with those already well established.
Start narrow, and then pick up another niche or sub-niche and build another blog that will have chances of becoming the go-to place.

When it comes to blogging to make money online, you need to choose one niche market or topic per blog. With each blog, you should do both product reviews and articles about stuff going on in your niche. When it comes to the niche, it should be one that's not only profitable but one you have an interest in and know a little something about. This just makes it easier to connect with your audience. You're also more likely to stick with something you like.

That would consider a general blog, many people have success in having such blog, you can use Adsense to earn income if your blog is sticky and can get many people to follow it.

I think that you need to have only one main niche if you wan't to be really successuful in short time not investing a lot of money.

The narrower the niche, the better for targetting. If your site will be about "many things",... well, that will be a bit hard.

Here are some ways that I'd do it, if I were you... perhaps this helps...
...I'd make a "lifestyle blog" or something similar
...would put a lot of energy into social marketing
...get yourself noticed on various forums, blog directories
...create perhaps 4-5 strictly relevant sub-categories... maybe (this is just an idea): SOCIAL/RELATIONSHIPS, HEALTH, HUMOR/ENTERTAINMENT, FINANCE...

I think you could get listed on FARK.com, on BOTW's blog directory.

Don't forget to use the SM bookmarking services (AddThis is a great tool and it's free).

I think for you it would be very interesting to include the following that could spread virally:
-quotes with images (you know, those that spread on Facebook)
-Chinese proverbs and others... could also spread virally via Facebook
-jokes... but make sure it's not offending to anyone (I'd be very careful about this)
-interesting photos (some people like to stare for minutes and spread such photos)

If you don't want to make money with that blog then there is no issue.

A successful blog is focused on one topic or very few ones. If you have a blog about everything, some people will tend to avoid it, because it is very tiring to look for what you need through lots of posts.

Its fine blogging on different topics if you don't intend to monetize the blog. If you are planning on making money from this blog, you have to pick a particular niche.

if you really want to have all those topics, make sure to include a menu on your first page.

Actually, this is almost exactly what I have. My blog is overall focused on working at home and different things that working at home entails. And in with that are other topics or categories that have to do with life at home in general.

My take on it is this, and some may agree, some may not. Each post or page that you have is indexed in its own right by whatever keyword you choose. So build categories for those different topics.

For example, my original blog under this domain was strictly carved out for the very specific niche of doing general transcription. Then I had a second blog just for nail art, and another blog for something else. None of them were very successful on their own because I just didn't have enough time to focus on each one separately.

So I converted the site over to a new keyword phrase for the site, expanded a little on the general transcription and then I created the category I Love Nail Art category moved all of the posts from that blog over to my main blog about working at home and put it under its own category.

Now some may say, but what does nail art have to do with working from home? That's easy ... I work from home and I'm saving money by not going to the salon. And I'm teaching others how to do the same. Piece of cake.

Now if I don't have enough time to spend on that one small narrow niche of nail art, or the small niche of transcription or the small niche of whatever else, it doesn't matter. I have other topics that drive traffic to my blog and when people get there, they'll see the other categories.

There are A LOT of blogs out there that are set up the same way. You don't really have to carve out tiny little niche blogs anymore if you really feel you're not going to have enough time to devote to each one.

If you want to set up a blog that talks about a lot of general topics, go for it. Just be sure to do some keyword research for each topic, and if you can do it, tie the topics in with the general theme of your blog. Since you're thinking about life in general, that should be easy!

As for monetizing that type of a blog, there's AdSense, Clickbank, and don't forget about YouTube! If you can create a video to go with each blog post, that will accomplish a couple of things...

First, time on your site will decrease your bounce rate.
Next, if your videos are monetized, that's additional AdSense revenue opportunity.

You an also compile several of your posts into ebooks and sell those for a couple of bucks.

I say - go for it. If you have a lot that you like to talk about, there is no reason why a general blog can't work!

Blogging can be in any topic. It can be related to your personal life also. You should go for it and you will have wide opportunity to write about various topics.

Your best bet is to ask successful bloggers, because everybody else is just guessing.

I see many people making good money from those blogs... By the way i think is easier to get fast free traffic. My plan is to make money from adsense.

I think this could work! My Wordpress site allows me to add additional pages on other topics. These are listed in a horizontal fashion in a topic bar at the top of the blog. Each individual page can be used as a separate blog.

you can blog anything that's informal, fun, and bias, but monetizing them will be a bit hard. But maybe you can put ppc, or maybe ppsale program like ubid.com (bidding site) or groupon. still , biased topic/ unfocus is hard to turn to money

I'm also trying that and I sincerely believe it works better especially when You've got a lot of ideas. But as it has been said, to focus is better. But why not diversify? Build one blog for all and others for your specifics- then see the difference and keep both gains

What you should do is have 80% narrow niche and 20% randomized topics.

That way you can still engage creatively while still maintaining the benefits of a narrow niche.

hmmmmm i would advice for a niche specific site but on the other hand....

This is not my experience mind you, I don't see why you couldn't draw tons of traffic in with a magazine site or news site. I would categorize the different topics you will talk about in the menu bar at the top of the page. I would keyword research the words you want to target for your posts and videos.

More importantly I would create brand recognition by making sure i had a logo that is on my header image at the top of my site, in a little intro video at the beginning of all my vids and on my facebook page. You can get this done at fiverr.

I would also focus on guestblogging backlinks from high pr sites. making sure they attribute the dofollow tag and also make sure your anchor text are varied.

hmmmm. i dont see why not. then again, its not my experience - i profit from a niche specific site.

Just try to blog more about something specific.

I am not saying that it is not possible to succeed with a blog that talks about everything, I just think you will connect much more closely with your readers if you narrow down your topic.

I started a blog similar to what you are talking about. I enjoy it a lot more even though I don't make much money doing it. I'm excited to recommend things I use personally and I can sell honestly. It's far easier to convince someone to buy something that you use. I'm not a marketing major though so take it for what its worth.

If these topics are related then your blog will be interesting for the reader. What really matters is to help your readers feel that they are learning something meaningful with a certain purpose, and not that your blog is an article directory.

‘Related to life’ is too vague. You must specify somehow your intention, and present articles that help your readers learn something about life that will help them have a good mood, or help them become elegant, help them make friends, help them follow a healthy lifestyle, etc.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a general blog provided, as others have said, you have categories and make sure navigation is easy. You'll end up with a nice big site which is good and don't forget its the individual pages that you will be ranking for.
