How do you sell a product with a large file size?

I have some videos and audios that I'm packaging into a product to sell. As you can imagine, the size of the files are huge as there's a lot of videos and audios. Because the file size is so large, I can't upload it to Amember unless I break it into individual files. What sorts of other options exist?

One common solution for this is to upload them into a cloud storage service like amazon cloud service and then link them to your membership site download page.

Cloud storage service is pretty cheap and fast.

Services like amazon s3 and cloudfront would probably be ideal for your needs.

    Hi Kim,
I would recommend to use Amazon S3 integration which is built into aMember Pro v4. Just enable "s3" file storage plugin at aMember CP -> Setup -> Plugins, configure it at aMember CP -> Setup -> S3, and you will be able to protect files and videos that are uploaded to your Amazon S3 storage - without size and performance limits!

    Kim,

As others have said Amazon S3.

It is really easy to use. It is just like uploading a file to a website, and getting the URL to put in your download link.

Amazjon offers something they call AWS - Amazon Web Services. S3 is one of those services. You go to aws.amazon(dot)com and sign in with your Amazon email and password.

On the AWS page, in the upper right there is a dropdown menu called "My Account / Console." One of the choices in the dropdown is "AWS Management Console." That will take you in to a list of the dozen or so services included in Amazon's AWS services - S3 is in there.

Once in S3 you create a folder - Amazon calls it a Bucket. As you will see you can also create a LOG bucket which keeps track of what downloads happened.

Create your LOG bucket first because it is much easier than trying to rename a LOG bucket after you have made your download bucket. Yes, I know it seems weird to call a folder a bucket!

You simply upload your files into the bucket. The files you upload are automatically made private. No one can see them except you. To make a file be public so people can download it from your download page, simply click on the file, and a dropdown menu gives you several options, one of which is "Make Public."

Once you chose "Make Public" then right click on the file name, and S3 will give you the URL you will need to put into your download page.

It is really almost the same as uploading to your website. The price is pennies per download, and you won't be using up a lot of bandwidth at your own site.

    Hope that helps.

      Nice tutorial, Don!
However, there is a possible problem not mentioned - a customer can copy the download link and publish it, then everyone will be able to download files and you will pay for bandwidth.
Our aMember and other solutions allows to keep files private, and visitors will receive a temporary links to download that will expire in 15-30 minutes after generation. So even if one decides to share download link, it will be impossible.

FTP. Simply drag and drop your large files over to your website. A good tool for this is FileZilla.

You really should break it up in smaller chunks. Not everyone has high-speed. Not to mention if a file is corrupt they have to re-download the entire thing.

For big downloads, I offer a CD shipped on the download page for a few bucks. Only a few have ever wanted it but they where thankful.

You might want to suggest a download management program above the downloads.

I don't use S3 as Hostgator has enough storage space and bandwidth that it's cheaper for my sites. One site I have uses over 35 gig of space.

I suggest you provide PDF versions too, and can let buyers get the small PDF version, then they can download the big file.

Amazon S3 is the way to go, it is easy to use, they do provide URL shortener service for your download links, as well you can make those shortened links expire at a time you set, if you are concerned about shared links. If you plan to use a members area I suggest Easy Member Pro, the program is easy to instal and use and hiding your download links is easy using the built in cloaker

There are ways to protect S3 links. There is a WP plugin but I can't think of the name right now.

S3 storage, or some sort of cloud hosting. You could also look into a Seedbox if you're going to be doing constant launches or hosting tons of large file products. But that can get a bit complicated unless you know exactly what you're doing.

You could always combine S3 storage (very cheap and it adjusts to how much data you have to store) with a real physical DVD that actually gets mailed to buyers. It would add value to your product and make it easy for those who don't have extremely fast internet access with large allowances.

The service I used was Kunaki.com - You burn your own DVD at home, leave it in the DVD player and Kunaki will get you to download the software that creates a bit image that it slowly updates over a period of days (or hours if you have a really fast connection). You can stop and start your machine and it will still eventually send the entire image up to the Kunaki servers.

They allow you to add a nice cover (there are templates you can get), will allocate a library number and bar code, print the DVD with proper non smudge ink, put it all in a large plastic DVD cover, wrap it in cellophane and ship it anywhere (you pay shipping) for $1.

I'm not associated with them. I just used them to deliver large movie files like you need to. I gave people the opportunity to download the files if they wanted but also there was a DVD on the way. It brings you closer to your clients too because who doesn't like getting parcels delivered to their door?

Amazon s3 is a great option for quality audio and vidoes.
Other alternatives can be dropbox, copy or G.Drive
