Do You Get Out and Meet People in The Real World?

I saw someone else who posted here about actually talking to other Warriors. I know one person from the boards that I know as more than just a fellow poster and we sometimes talk on the phone. But that's it.

As a copywriter and an introvert, I stay busy but don't get out much. I'd like to, but it's not always easy to get out by yourself. (I'm also single.)

I need to get out more and meet people with similar interests (not necessarily business networking or dating), and someone else suggested MeetUp.com.

Does anyone else have a problem getting out and socializing like me (not just business networking)? Has anyone ever used MeetUp.com to hook up with people with similar interests and get out a little more?

Just curious!

Before i got into this i was a club promoter, meet loads of people every single night.. made great money... but thought IM seemed abit more of a long term investment in my time

Forming some relationships outside of the forums (im, chatting on the phone) definitely helps. I've been able to make a few friends that I have gradually grown to trust more and more, and that's definitely a huge plus in this sometimes shakey IM world.

Good point, Matt. I love IM and boards like this one. From a business standpoint, I'd like to build my IM network a little more and get to know some IM'rs better and a little more personally. In spite of our oh-so-connected world, sometimes I feel more isolated than ever.

        Anybody else have that problem?

As I said, I'd like to connect personally, too. Maybe MeetUp.com will help, I dunno. I like the fact that they have groups with varying interests. It's hard to maintain any sort of relationship/friendship with someone you have nothing in common with! As a writer and bookworm, maybe a book club would work for me.

I rarely read fiction anymore, instead mostly focusing on non-fiction like business, marketing, finance and investing books. I love these types of books, but I also miss the stories. (And I think my own ability to write a good story for sales letters has suffered a bit.) So I recently cruised the fiction books at the library the other day and came home with a few.

I HATE spending time reading a book that I don't really like. But I did come away with a book I'm really enjoying. It's called "The Intelligencer" by Leslie Silbert and is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's a thriller/suspense piece set in two different eras: Elizabethan England and the present day. I love "intelligent" fiction and this one is just loaded with historical facts. (The author is a Harvard guaduate and a PI.)

If you're up for a good book, I HIGHLY recommend it!

Conventions, seminars and conferences are good.

I've also had luck with Meetup.com in finding some good offline activities to go to.
I even started an Internet Marketing meetup group so I could talk to and network in real life with other internet marketers in the area.

Generally speaking if you want to set up meaningful joint ventures and relationships with other serious players in the internet marketing niche you'll probably need to meet some people in person or at least speak to them on the phone or Skype.

You can do it with email etc but it's slow and person to person meetings give you a chance to build real friendships.

As a copywriter you could start working with a few local business owners and build a few ongoing friendships and your skills that way.

              Kindest regards,

Thanks for the tip, Andrew, but I'm not having a hard time with meeting people for business purposes. Mainly, I was talking about socializing for non-business purposes. I find it waaay too easy to get caught up in business activities (because I love it) and spend waaay too much time in the virtual world instead of the real world. I was just wondering if anyone else had that same problem...

Josh, GREAT idea about using MeetUp.com to start a local Internet marketing group! It's so obvious but it just never occurred to me. Thanks!

                  Have a great day, Warriors!

Ya, this has actually worked really great for me. I've met several really smart and interesting people and even made some "real" friends from it.
The cool thing is that its a great way to meet people that do the same stuff that we do so its so much funner and easier to talk to them since we have so much in common.

It takes a few meetings for the group to grow and takes a little work to maintain but it really is a great way to network with other local IMers.

Meetups are great. I would also suggest other organizations that help you to develop your social skills. Toastmasters has worked wonders for my social skills. Also, I tend to sign up for different breakthrough or success courses as well. There's also volunteer work, working with your church and so much more.

After that initial push out the door, it's down hill from there and will be easier the next time.

Wait... you mean there's a life outside kids and the computer??!!??

How come nobody ever told me??

Seriously, Michelle, I think when you're an introvert like we are, it's just a matter of making yourself get out of the house once in a while. Some cities have local book clubs that meet up every month, amongst other hobbist clubs you could join. A few others here have suggested Toastmasters; I'd also suggest Kiwanis and the Optimists.

Also, on a business networking note, you may want to try your local chamber of commerce and a local BNI group.

I can suggest Dale Carnegie course which covers on socializing and making friends.

I am sure there are many social events that you can join and even during family gatherings. Offer to chat with more family members and it is sure a good way to start.

                          Cheers,

I have never used a meet-up site or anything to meet people. I guess I wouldn't feel comfortable trying to meet a group of strangers in real life.

But you have to get out and socialize. I'm being dead serious. I've gone thru major isolation starting when my parents kept me locked up and wouldn't let me out and it's just unhealthy. It can lead to severe depression. So from first hand experience that still haunts me, you have to do something to get out in the real world. I wish I had suggestions since I'm not comfortable meeting complete strangers from a meetup. The best places to meet people are school and work but if you're out of school and self employed, that's no option. Personally I have met lots of friends at church and there's always social events, birthday parties, baby showers, classes and all kinds of stuff going on that keeps me busy. You may not have religion but that's worked great for me.

If I already knew the person online I would meet them but I don't think I could meet complete strangers I never even "typed" to before. If any warriors are gonna be in the central bluegrass area let me know

    Hi Michelle,

I am an introvert too. When I get too nervous meeting people, I used to stutter. It made me fearful of meeting people.

But I have no choice, which is good for me. I was a member of a local subscribers group and we met up quite often.

We needed to interact with people and strangers. We needed to share what we had done. It was talking, talking and talking and I was not used to it.

I even remembered pretending to excuse myself to the washroom cos I was so afraid to talk in public.

After 6 months of constant practice, I became better. It was not easy. But I must say I did improve.

If you ask me now do I still feel scared of talking to people, I still do.

But I see from another angle, it is nice to meet people and hear about their life adventures. =)

    Cheers,
    John

    Hey Nightengale,

Well, virtually everyone I know outside of internet marketing are people from church. But this winter I might join a fitness center, and that tends to be a decent place to meet people as well.

    Hope this helps!

I've never had much luck at gyms or fitness centers. Sure you can do it but I've found most people are actually there to get a workout in.

Church can be a good place as long as you go to some of the smaller functions or special events. You have to find a way to break out of the crowd and narrow it down a little bit. But usually churches have a lot of these so its not to hard.

Yes! I live out amongst the three-dimensional people.

I even meet up with fellow Warriors, although they all live far, far away. We just had a get-together in Bali in June, where Warriors from Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, India, and as far away as the UK and US got together for a fun-filled five days of drinking, eating, sightseeing, parasailing, and swapping stories. Kevin Riley Inc Bali Rendezvous was a smashing hit

Us J-Warriors quite often meet up. James B Allen just made the trip down here to Osaka, and for four very busy days we planned out and started our brand new LPP system. Meeting up in 3-D makes a big difference. We sat side by side in my office and brainstormed our whole strategy, planned out all our product outlines, and got a fantastic start on this mega-project. Now, just 1 1/2 weeks later, we're ready to launch Phase I.
