You can usually remove them by adding some of your own. Or if that doesn't work, visit sidebar.php and try deleting them there.

WordPress › Atahualpa WordPress Themes is a really good and configurable theme to try.

Yah..as what Nathan said..there is a default arrangement for the widgets...

just add in your own and your new settings will be saved. =)

    Cheers,

It depends on a theme, some themes have no pre installed widgets at all (you can add your own, but if you just upload and activate a theme, there won't be any widgets active) other themes come with default widgets, in some cases activating a new widget will remove all the default ones from that column, in other cases those widgets will stay there and the newly activated widget will go "under" the default ones.

Used to drive me nuts that I couldn't seem to find a theme that didn't have default widgets that don't disappear when you activate one manually. You find a great theme and the creator just has to screw it up by slapping some silly widget that can't be removed. (Since I don't really know css screwing around with the theme's files usually is a waste of time for me unless it's something simple)

Anyway, to add something useful to this post. Check out artisteer, it lets you create great looking wordpress themes in literally seconds. And you can choose a ton of things from layout to what default widgets to include, to width of columns etc etc. Really a great deal for 50$ (home edition) Especially if you plan to create more than one wp theme.
