I hate paypal, but unfortunately I use it a lot. There really is so little real competition!

paypal has monopolized ecommerce, practically every internet user has a paypal account. so your customers are more likely to buy through them. clickbank is often associated with spam especially those not familiar with internet marketing.

PayPal is a good way in which you can sell your products and services.

Although I would still go with other payment options because you will have more ways in which you can present to your customers as payment options.

Not everyone likes PayPal, and Clickbank sounds like spam.

If you sell few, PayPal is recommended.

If you sell thousands of products, PP is not recommended. Consider: 2checkout, ClickBank (if you promote digital products), Google Checkout.

Selling through PayPal only, depending on your business's turnover, number of items, and the nature of what you're selling, isn't necessarily a big mistake, but being able to sell only through PayPal might be, in case you eventually run into a sudden problem with your PayPal account (and if you do run into a problem, typically it will be "sudden"). It's always worth having another set-up ready to use, "just in case".

Depending on what you're selling, 2Checkout and Plimus are both particularly convenient in that customers can buy from them by PayPal (i.e. expanded market) without the merchant needing to use PayPal to collect the money from the payment processor.

Google checkout is more trusted than paypal.. I only use paypal when transferring money, but not for other transactions, particularly if it is related to business... I once had a problem with paypal's customer service...

I'd imagine that's probably true, actually. But it doesn't matter very much, because for customers Google Checkout (which varies greatly from country to country) can be a real pain in the neck to use, and it'll also significantly decrease your market size, because of all the people who have PayPal accounts but don't have credit-cards. The extent to which that matters is obviously going to depend on your customer demographics.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with having Google Checkout as an additional alternative to PayPal. But given a choice, to use it instead of PayPal would, for many purposes, be a huge mistake, in my opinion..

We got the message that you don't like PayPal, Travis.

Personally, I had a major problem with Google Checkout, the first time I tried to use it (and many people will be using it "for the first time"!).

But what matters here is what the majority of the OP's customers prefer, not your previous experiences and mine!

Do not limit your pay processor to Paypal only if you are a serious internet marketer. Try to add other payment options so you can be sure your customer is not going to another provider or website because his preferred payment mode is not listed in your website. Diversify and add options like Google checkout, direct credit card payments, Payza, etc.

It's definitely true with online buying today, the more payment options you have the more likely you will be to get the sale.

BlueSnap is always trying to add more payment options and receive suggestions on what more we can offer for a Seller to make that sale through our EcoSystem

I only use Paypal servers to process my payments and have never had a problem getting good conversions. I've been using them since the start (in 2009) and never had the need to try anything else.

If it's not broken, don't fix it.

My advice is to NOT sell through paypal... for any reason if your site breaks their terms of service they will shut your paypal account down for life...

I know this because it happened to me

When presented with Paypal and fully integrated Credit Card processing, its about 50/50 with which they use. After speaking to numerous customers, those who use credit card usually cite these reasons:

    1. Don't know what PayPal is/Don't have account and think its hard to setup
    2. Don't realize you can dispute with Paypal (or even charge back if you use a card through paypal)
    3. Want to pay with their card and think Paypal is only direct checking account.
    4. Have had a bad experience with Paypal in some way and don't want to use them.

Main demographics that are going to this particular checkout are age 40+. So if that's your demographic I would suggest having credit card payment integrated into your site along side Paypal.

I like Paypal. I have heard and found that as long as you are not cashing out all the time, and have funds to cover your refunds all the time. You will be just fine, but I agree with the comment above that you should always have a CC processor as well

There are downsides to using other payment processors in addition to PayPal.

For one thing, take getting a merchant account like Mastercard. They can be
really tough on you with refunds and chargebacks, even more so than PayPal
and can make your life a living hell. People don't realize this but brick and
mortar businesses that use Mastercard, Visa, etc, do not have a cakewalk with
      them.

Also, using other processors that aren't as well known can cause other
problems such as reliability and trust issues.

PayPal is established and, for the most part, widely trusted and used. Sure,
you'll lose out on sales through countries that can't use it, but they shouldn't
amount to so many that it really matters.

I only use PayPal and it hasn't hurt me any ... yet.

My 2 cents for what they're worth.

Buyers like having their choice of payment options. About 25% of my customers use Paypal, while most prefer standard CC processing. I would expect that you'd see more PayPal buyers if your audience is more tech savy.

Regardless, there's no way I'd go with only one or the other. I started out that way, but sales definitely went up as I gave people more choices.

  • I personally would never rely on PayPal for any serious volume. They have a chaotic tendency to freeze accounts out of the blue for no particular reason.

I recently got shutdown by paypal and could have ruined my business, I didn't have a merchant account setup and didn't really have any plans in the works to get one. I got shutdown, paypal told me I had 466 violations. I woulda been screwed as here I'm missing out on orders and having to try to get a merchant account on the fly. Fortunatey and surprisingly Paypal was a pleasure to work with and I was up and running in less than 30 hours. That tought me a lesson though, don't be dependend on one merchant. If I lost paypal it would still hurt as like you guys said they have name recognition, everyone has an cct, everyone uses them etc but at least if I have a backup I have some alternative vs no alternative

I use paypal pro for selling my services.
I use clickbank for selling digital products and the benefit of affiliate features.

These are my two favorite payment processors.
