Or.. are there still people making a living simply through adsense, PCP, and affiliate programs? Seems like the general consensus here is to "build lists", get "subscribers" etc.. Just wondering if people have been able to build an authority/niche/micro-niche site and grind it out the old fashion way and still make a living.

I can't speak for everyone else - But I do make the majority of my income through email marketing and promoting affiliate products. I've tried the 'niche site' thing, but found it too frustrating with all the changes in Google's algorithm.

I have a website that I'm building upon the Men's Health niche. Just wondering if I should stick solely to adsense/PCP or to try branching out into e-mail marketing. It seems like that is where all the big bucks are. I want to continue updating my site with articles because I actually enjoy it, but I'm wondering if it wouldn't hurt to offer a subscription service offering free promotions, offers, and discounts on health related products. Could be another good source of income..

I don't do Adsense, or SEO at all, nor do I have 'content'. Email, affiliate offers, PPC is all gold. But trust me, there is much more than what most people talk about on here. So don't be afraid to try something different.

    JD,

I have have 4 lists that were built by short reports mainly. (the style you reference in your title). However, I have two sites that are primarily affiliate sites, and I still make more money from these than from my lists.

I started building "authority-type" affiliate websites 4 years ago, and together those two sites average over 30 sales a day. But it took 15 months before they got enough consistent traffic for me to quit my day job.

If I were starting over today, I would choose an extremely popular niche, build a sales funnel to sell and capture leads, and then invest in CPA marketing. Take the ridiculous money you can make in CPA, buy some galloway and angus cattle, and hedge against inflation by laundering my money through grass, cattle, gold and silver.

Mooo. Hope that answers your question

    Edit:

You should do both. If you're getting any traffic at all, you need to have an incentive to join a list. No reason you can't do both.

Again, same answer, you should do both. I would position your sub offer as a VIP type thing. And give them something for joining. The beauty of a list is that you can directly market to people without them coming to your site again. Also, there is no "commitment" on their part beyond giving their email. No monthly fee. However if you have enough quality content to give, you'd be surprised how many people will join a monthly subscription and passive recurring income is <3

I think you'd make a lot more money if you replaced your adsense spots with banners to your own product. Just my 2c.

    Best regards

I think I get what you're saying, although they seemed slightly metaphorical. Haha. Thank you.

I spent around 2 years working on niche sites when i first came online but i ended up putting my main focus on list building as I found it more profitable and a lot more stable in terms of income

That`s not to say niche sites are a waste of time, because I wouldn`t know what I know now if I didn`t spend all that time doing SEO etc

Starting off with adsense/niche sites etc is a great way to start as it helps you to build some strong core skills which will become very helpful further down the road

I didn't want to come right and say it, but in a way, niche sites can be a waste of time, unless you know how to drive targeted traffic, which of course, you usually don't figure out until you've been worn out on SEO.

But I started my sites 4 years ago. Things were different back then. I think Paul nails it, because there are definitely more efficient ways to go...but you need to learn that, which often comes after you've spent time and money elsewhere.

That said, JD is in a great niche. Just grab your slice of the pie!

Having a niche site and building a list to do e-mail marketing is perhaps the most common way to make money online, but it's not the only one. You could do ghostwriting, have a PLR store, do mobile marketing, have a membership site and more. There are, however, a limited number of ways to make legit money online.

I personally make most of my money online from affiliate products and ebook sales, but lately I haven't been making that much as I've been giving everything away for free to build up my list
