Backlink Page vs Domain?

Let's say I've found some pages for a keyword phrase on page 1 of Google. The OnPage SEO is minimal for the phrase. The number of backlinks to the PAGE is minimal. But, the number to the SITE is HUGE. (Such as amazon.com, answers.yahoo, etc).

How hard is it to get a page to beat such pages in Google?

Would a reasonable amount of backlinks to MY PAGE with good onpage SEO make up for a hundred thousand backlinks to the other site's domain?

And, as a follow up, is it useful to get backlinks to multiple pages -- even from the same site?

Its what happens when you try and post on forums when SEOQuake plugin is left on.

It does an analysis like lightening of the links on the page - PITA to leave it run while working ... it happens so fast - most times you done even notice it when your posting.

rookie movie I suspect - i done it too :-)

It's about how to boost post count without being so obvious so no one thinks that's what is going on.

        Hey Jason,

Yea Wikipedia is hard to beat but if its Amazon then yes you can beat it. Of course it has a lot of backlinks to the main domain but to that page it may only have a few hundred to not many at all.

Just find out how many links are pointing to the amazon type sites for the keywords your ranking for. You then just need to optimize your site for those keywords and start building links. If amazon is showing up that usually means that there is not to much competition and google places them in the top due to the items they have for sale.

The idea is to find all the keywords you would rank for in the niche your trying to target. Then rank the from the least traffic/competition to the most. Start targeting the one with the least amount of traffic that your going to target and once you rank for it then move on to the next one. This way you starting having a site that ranks number one for key terms even though they dont have a lot of traffic google see's it as a plus and then you just keep pluggin away to the other ones.

        just my 2 cents

Ecellent tip, and this works well!

I think he's showing the sites he's placed backlinks on but he keeps waiting and waiting for ranking and traffic, but nothing comes. Just my guess.

I'm surprised no one has an answer to this. It seems a very basic question for anyone familiar with SEO. (I'm not one of those.)

    Xebec,

Those entrenched domains like wikipedia and yahoo will be hard to overcome. You can get on the 1st page but getting the 1 or 2 spot and knocking them down is hard because they're more than 10 years old and have millions of links pointing to the domain.

You can do it but will have to have lots of links and optimization. I don't have a general rule of thumb for you in terms of "get 1,000 or 10,000 links to the page".

You have to decide whether it's worth the effort to go after those top couple spots or whether rankings lower on page 1 will still be worth it.
