Hello,

I created a black ops 2 strategy guide that I will be selling.

How do I make sure that everyone cannot copy my work or call it their own?

Also, what is the best way to sell a strategy guide of this sort?

I have been working on SEO for the website but have not reached the first page yet.

I appreciate all feedback!

Thank you

The main thing you want to do is to get it up and published as quickly as possible. In terms of selling it, I'd recommend the Kindle for sure.

There'll always be people who will copy and share anything but there's nothing much you can do about that so don't sweat it. You will use up too much energy if you try to fight it.

    willisk,

Congratulations! I guess this might be considered intellectual property ? I would suggest contacting an attorney as A/S/A/P before someone picks up on it. Even then, try to chase them particularly if they are only online. I hope it works for you. Good luck,

Your greatest challenge is really promotion of your ebook and
not protection of its contents. Once your book is out there
then it's no longer protected as was mentioned before.

I know when I created my first ebook protection was the first
thing on my mind but the worry about your work being stolen
    is not worth it.

When I look in my traffic stats I see all the Blackhat forum
links to my pages and just have to shake my head. Comes
with the territory of selling digital products.

Even though your copyright is automatic, if you are in the United States you should consider filing with the U.S. Copyright Office for additional benefits. It is done online, takes a few minutes and costs $35: U.S. Copyright Office - Online Services (eCO: Electronic Copyright Office)

I know pretty much everyone that creates a product or service is worried about someone steeling and reselling their product or giving it away for free. With all honesty at our levels of selling it's not worth the time and effort to put very strict rules and time in place to try and protect the content.

Create the product and put a copy-write on the bottom of your site and product

Protect it by only allowing members or buyers to have access to the product this can be done via any membership script really.

Doing those two simple things is all you need to do to protect your content. After that's done your biggest focus as always will be promoting it.

One thing I can toss into this discussion. If you are selling your eBook as a download from your site then you should create the eBook as an Adobe Acrobat file (PDF). You then can put in security settings that would prevent anyone from modifying the eBook, basically only allow reading and/or printing. Of course someone could still scan a print with OCR and steal it that way, but most people will be honest and not steal it.

Apparently most people will use your product in good faith and not worry about copying and sharing it with everyone they know. So I agree with people here you cant stop the odd bad apple out there.

Don't worry and sell even more.

Sweet idea for an ebook! ( I can't wait for black ops 2 to release lol ) People already gave you some good answers but Google is always there if you need to do some quick research on the topic copyrighting digital downloads.

I always do a few things...

    1. Make sure my downlooad is secure with a password, seems logical, but many people we work with have their download available from a wide open page

    2. Second, I always place a statement in bold, large font on the second page (following cover) that states this material is Copyright, not for re-publish or resell by anyone without express consent of .... Some of the pirated material I have found people use of mine has been an accident - people thought it was PLR or Resell Rights when it was not - having the statement makes it clear and prevents this unintiential "stealing"

    3. Every once in a while search for your title and a sentence of your material just to make sure nobody else is blatently selling your ebook or that they haven't published your material online without permission

Otherwise, you can't do much. Honestly - we have not found that piracy is a significant problem...it does happen, but not a massive issue.

I am not sure if you can actually copyright it because your ebook or guide is centered around someone else's intellectual property.

Not only that but I bet that the game creators have already have the rights or sold the rights to someone else to create an Official guide for the game.

The most you will probably be able to do is to just sell it as your own guide. Even then because it is centered around someone else's intellectual property they would be able to step in at any time and stop you from selling it, if they so wanted.

For those warriors who posted above that "your copyright is automatic" where did you get that idea?

    That just don't make sense.

Was this something that you guys heard? Or did you have an actual Lawyer who specializes in copyright tell you that?

And if this was true, then why have a copyright office anyway?

I would love to see the reaction of a Lawyer or Judge if you tried telling them that.

If people are determined to steal it, they will.

Put a standard disclaimer and copyright page at the beginning. That's all you
      can do.

Your biggest challenge is going to be in selling it, not protecting it.
