Business Idea - How to go about seeing it become reality!

Hi There,

I've discovered a market that hasn't been fulfilled and I definitely see market potential. I've spent the past day searching the internet and I can't see my idea available right now.

My question is, how do I go about seeing it through. It would definitely need investors as I anticipate it involving many people to assist in the creation of it. I'm a big picture person, and I have no idea on web programming, software creation, IP etc. I'm a good salesman and have great marketing skills, but that's about it.

Should I inquire with Silicon Valley? I mean how do I get programmers etc without the threat of someone stealing my idea. Should I patent the idea first? How would I patent it when I wouldn't know technically how it works etc.

Any help guys, I would greatly appreciate.

Cheers,
GJ

That depends upon what it is really. Is it a website, affiliate program, piece of software?

I've written plenty of white papers on outsourcing, so here are a few tips.

First, envision precisely that you need. I mean "exactly". You need to know the "functional requirements" of your system so you can adequately outsource it without any problems.

Once you know exactly what your system needs to function the way you see, you can organize it and have it outsourced.

Now I could write a novel and chat with you for hours on outsourcing, but here are two tips to help prevent theft.

First, try to "compartmentalize" your outsourced projects. That is, don't let one person "do everything"; because they can steal it.

When you're brainstorming your projects, separate everything you can. Integrate this logic into your planning.

In other words, have systems built separately so as one person couldn't steal your main business even if they wanted to. (Hope that makes sense, it's a huge key).

Second, ensure all of your outsourcers sign a no disclosure agreement, and also have signed contracts with their photo ID and signature applied to the contract.

As far as finding people to help, that's the easy part. Just remember to ensure your outsourcer understand the functional requirements to the "t". Make them relay the functional requirements back to you in their own words to ensure they understand comprehensively. That's another reason why your functional requirements must be defined with precision.

    PS: Food for thought.

Before I turned into a massive computer nerd, way back in the day, I had a friend who used to program basically anything I wanted.

The first question he would always ask is "Tell me exactly what you want it to do".

That's where your functional requirements come in. - This is valuable data, use it wisely.

I cant offer any advice on the legal aspect on this beyond a agreement that prevents disclosure and circumventure signed up front.

Their are lots of freelance sites where you can hire programmers. Site like odesk and elance are examples. Google will help you find more.

You will need to figure out what your idea is and how it will be implemented before speaking to programmers. You need to be able to provide detailed instructions to guys you outsource to and getting things wrong can lead to substantial cash losses.

    Do your due diligence.

Remember that not finding an idea is not an indication that it will work. Quite possibly its been tried before without success. Does it solve a need? Are their people bothered by it enough to pay for it?

Have a look at Google search volume for terms related to your idea. Dont expect to create a market if their isnt one.

That is exactly what I was going to say. A lot of times there is a gap in the market for a reason -- because others have tried and there is no money to be made there.

It's the same in advertising. When keywords have very little competition there's usually a very good reason for that.

So make sure you do a LOT of market research before investing too much time or money.

    Thanks Sarevok,

But I have absolutely no idea about the functional requirements. I am a big picture person. The idea could run on software or through a browser as a plugin. But definitely on one end will need to be software.

Like I can't even begin to fathom the functionality of it. Do you recommend I just keep breaking down my idea?

You need to understand the big picture Gary clearly. Understand what it needs to do from a macro view and then break it down. You dont need to know the technical aspects 100% but you need to know how it will work.

    Thanks Baadier and Will,

Yep, already done some basic market research. Might need to take it to the next level though.
