Competing against yourself

I currently have a couple of moderately successful online businesses. Unfortunately, due to my revenue model, and how long they've been like this, I feel I've trapped myself by limiting their potential income.

I do realize that I can always add more features and/or change the way my income is generated, but I do that at the risk of losing my existing member base. Also, reinventing yourself can have negative drawbacks, such as your site losing it's simplicity and ease of use.

So, lately I've been toying with the idea of creating new web sites specifically targeted towards competing with my own web sites. The newer versions will be feature rich, slick and innovative. I think of it as having a free and a paid version of my products.

Any other insights you might have to this business practice? Benefits or drawbacks?

I say better you than someone else. But my theory is you will never please everyone. In fact I think it's good to alienate people. Indifference is what we struggle against in marketing!

I think it's a good idea.. having a network of websites or businesses in one niche and "OWNING" it sounds pretty awesome.. and profitable

I have more than one site in my main niche. Each has a different focus and is therefore found for different keywords if someone is searching.

I also pass traffic between the sites. "If you want to know more about xyz click here" where clicking takes you to a relevant post on another of my sites.

My friend, whose affiliate program is the source of income for these sites, is considering expanding. Her current membership site is aimed at specific countries. She is working on expanding to a new country with a new site.

This could be a model that helps you? Where do your members come from? If the majority are from a small range of countries, consider a different version of the site that might have content more relevant to members from other countries.

    Just some thoughts.

Competeting with yourself is only successful if you are big on your field otherwise it is wate of effort

Just wondering if there is a second, slightly different market you could sell the same product to using a different website etc.

For example: you can sell SEO services to chiropractors, dentists, lawyers etc...

Or the Karate man who sells a product on how to punch to Karate students and then changes the same product to sell it for self-defence; or for security workers; or for stress-relief; or for beating up little brothers... joke!

    Same product different angles.

Same product really but a different approach, different marketing and perhaps different benefits involved in the process.

I remember back in 1992 when Guns N Roses came out with Use Your Illusion 1 & 2.

I was listening to the radio and they were talking about "Why Guns Would Want to Compete With Themselves"

And as a young fella back then I thought of something.

What If they could sell double the amount of albums. By having a 1 & 2 that is what they did. Having 2 sites in one niche isn't always competing against yourself.

Have a look at this thread. Maybe it will be more along the lines of what you are trying to accomplish.
