How to promote new forum

Hi WF,

Before I start, I am not thinking about creating a WF competitor when I ask this

I'm after some advice and people's opinion about creating a new forum website. A successful forum, one that is used often and offers decent information.....ie WarriorForum ....this relies on people using the forum, but people will only register and use it if its useful, get where im going with this?
How do you promote a forum? do you create a website that is of use first and then add the forum once you get a good amount of traffic to the site?

Any thoughts welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,

P

That's the main point. If you wish to make a website and based on the website a forum, than that would mean that you wish to promote mainly the website. If you wish to promote the forum just build it on the main domain.

I take your point imfusa, if you create a forum on the main domain how do you promote it? do you try and rank it organically to get traffic there in hope that visitors register?

      Thanks

For promoting a forum, you need targeted traffic. Because the traffic is the key to success a site include the forum.

    - high traffic blogs that related to the forum
    - press release sites
    - SEO at Google
    - viral marketing
    - social media - Facebook, Twitter

If you want fast traffic and add more new members in a short time, then you have to use paid advertising like banner ads to draw more people to your forum.

"Promoting" a forum is only part of it - you then need to convert visitor to member; and then members to poster. Have a look at these articles on the hypothetical 90-9-1 rule applied to forum:

It seems that the best way to promote a forum is... on other forums. There are quite a few forums that let you promote your own forum, usually in a section dedicated to promotion, or forum "showcase". There are also some forums dedicated entirely to forum promotion.

Free Stuff! The cool thing about starting a forum is, it is very similar to building an email list! Just like building an email list you'd give away free stuff, to encourage forum registration and community involvement you can do the same.

I recommend looking into some list building strategies and apply them to your forum efforts as well. Ultimately, your forum can really kick ass if it has good ranking in the search engines. You can also tactfully create posts and apply basic seo or backlinks to your forum so it also brings traffic naturally.

Nowadays, there's no sure fire way so you have to throw as much as you can and at least some will stick and bring the results you are after .

You can also advertise your forum on your sig of other forums

I'd never thought about approaching it like you would building a list, yes Im a relatively new IM'er. The area I was thinking about starting a forum is huge and not many forums, the idea of promoting it through other forums in your own sig is a good idea. I might try and see what the competition are doing and then take the best bits and improve on it.

Well, one way of luring forum members is allowing dofollow signature links. But of course, you'll need to get some threads going to give people something to discuss (which can be outsourced on Guru on Elance, just post a job and offer to pay $x.xx per quality thread started).

Make sure you have strong security protocols for your forum as forums are always target for hackers......
Post some youtube videos to promote your forum.
Also do proper SEO for your forum.
Face Book page will also help to bring traffic...

Use a referral plug-in for your forum if your forum don't already have one, then hold a referral contest where the member with the most referrals will win a prize, that way you can get a lot of members within a short period of time.

Building a successful forum will take years, if you are a very patient person and hard working then it's possible. Most people aren't that dedicated, furthermore, you will fail a lot before succeeding. But if you're serious, the key to building a successful forum is your marketing strategy.

You can outsource forum posting to similar forums. Search for outsources on Guru.com and fiverr.com "Forum Posting". Give them your signature promoting a free eBook, video, etc. Post the eBook, video, etc. on your forum.

I've got a forum and it gets quite a bit of traffic (mainly from the site it's linked to).

The biggest disappointment I have is that hardly anyone registers and contributes (apart from me!). How can I make people join in? I found much the same when I had a list - people just didn't want to ENGAGE.
