Help naming graphic design business? words to use?

I need a name to start advertising my services to local business's. I want to come across as a graphic designer as I am doing logo and web design.

I have looked at a lot of names of graphic design companies and a lot of them tend to use words like design, studios, creation or creative in their name.

I was thinking of maybe just using my initials or knickname
in front of one of these words like:

SD creations
SD design studios
PB Design studios

Studios maybe mistaken for photographers?

Has anyone any thoughts/ advice??

Thanks

I like design studio, sounds catchy and creative. Doesn't sound like a photographer necessarily to me. Maybe instead of initials, a catchier word in front to help remember? I don't know about you, but I'm horrible at remembering initials, "Was that SD? SB? FT??"

I want to keep it as short as possible... what should I use instead of initials?
My surname "Doherty" is a bit long if I use 3 words

Since your target is local businesses, what about a special geographic name that would show that you're local? Local always gets you points because people like dealing with one of their own. I'm not there, and this would be cliche, but you know, Emerald Isle Design Studios, or a specific local equivalent.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't want to use a place name as I want to target business on-line in the future as I plan to travel about. The shorter the name is the better I'd say

I am just starting out and I have done a few logos and web sites for small local business's. I want to also offer business cards, flyers etc. and advertise on-line in the future as well but I don't want to take on more than I can at the start.

I have done a few logos and websites for local business's so I have a small portfolio to show

Hi Sean, (great name by the way ),

I think something unique and memorable should be your first word, ie, Kreative (yes, with a K because its "different"), or IMPress Graphic Solutions, etc.

Other than that I also lean towards the idea of a local word, or regional word being used "somewhere" within the company name.

Why not pick 3 or 4 and then put them up in a poll and get people here at the warriorforum to vote on them, sounds good to me

            Shaun

You could also try playing with the word order:
    Studio D
    Design PB

Or maybe ditch the initials and just shoot for a random word- maybe your street name or even a nonsense word.

It seems like just about anything goes these days. Best of luck!

Most design companies I know have quirky / offbeat names.. Be wary though - with all the low-end stuff on fiverr, everyone and their dog is doing logo design these days.

Want my opinion? Don't even bother with logo design, find another design niche where the competition isn't as manic. Kindle / self-publishing market is booming, that's what I advise my students to get into as opposed to the standard business cards and letterhead fare.

You have to have razor sharp skills and excellent marketing ability to rise above the all too prevalent froth these days.

I think the initials would be best "PB designs" IMO
    Signature

But I knew the one thing I might regret is not ever having tried. "

I have noticed that hundreds of people/companies have "studio" or "design studio" etc in their name which will make it impossible for them to easily find my website...

If your target is local then using your name would be the best. I have been in and out of the design business since 2001 and I have used two names. One with the best results is when I used my name. Like you, the majority of my work was local. So I used windhamsinnovations (windham being my last name).

One thing I have learn from my father n laws business (landscaping) your name goes a long ways when you are targeting a small area (your town and those towns around it). So my suggestion would be to use your name in some form or shape but dont use initials only. They tell you the name of your business needs to be catchy but in this field you need to look at it as marketing "Sean". You are the product, you are the designer... what better name to use than your own

Just my little insight. Hope it works out for you man. If you have any questions about the field dont hesitate to ask. I may have some info that could be credible.

I used to run an interactive design agency. It was my name Lane Watson Interactive. What about Sean [whatever you last name is] Agency or design. I think a name, especially if you're good with engagement is powerful branding. Good luck

Go with the first. The second could get confused with something else.

I would definitely use the alliteration to your advantage. People remember things easier when alliteration has been used.

    Doherty Design

You could get a nice logo done (oops, you do logos yourself) with the two d's.

Get a catchy generic name. Ex: Graphica or Grafica etc
