Million Dollar Home Page

It seems so long ago but this was one of the most simple yet ingenious ideas of it's day. I Googled it out of curiosity to see if it was still there, and it is . . . The Million Dollar Homepage - Own a piece of internet history!

And to think it all started with an idea posted on a forum, here, on the 5th of September 2005. The subsequent posts on the thread make for interesting reading as well.

Many have copied since. None have surpassed. Doesn't that tell you something about being original.

That is cool i remember this it shows that a simple idea that goes viral, can make you a ton of money.

It's cool looking at that old forum post and seeing people's responses to his idea.

You knew it was going to take off when he sold over 1,000 dollars of them.

Thinking outside the box, and being original can make you a millionaire.

That brought a smile to my face I needed one today lol. Thanks for the piece of history a lot of us remember, or have heard of.

Originality is so rare. As soon as someone comes up with a great idea, every assmonkey and their brother attempts to clone it. Look at how many fiverr clones there are. Very few successful, I imagine.

I loved that idea when it came along and so glad he sold all the pixels. Originality should be rewarded.

he had a 1 million pixels for sale at a dollar a piece, with a minimum purchase amount of 10 pixels at $10.

Please bare in mind that I havent gone to check this, this is how i remember his concept working as its not the first time I've heard of it.

Sorry, my stupidity there. Obviously the sizes are different.

The must still be sending good traffic to some of the sites that bought space.

1,000,000 pixels, not sites. So each site paid multiple hundres of dollars for their ad. Great idea and looks like it worked!

WOW... never heard of this before.

At $1 per pixel, he must have made A LOT of cash: The Million Dollar Homepage - The List (exactly 1 million bucks).

Question: why would anyone pay to add their banner there? I mean, what's the benefit for the advertiser? surely no-one is going to notice their add in that mess? I think I'm missing something here ;p

      Novelty.

At the time it got a lot of media coverage online amongst the offline coverage. Its the type of story the public loves. I wonder if theirs a way we can see what kind of traffic data he gets.

High PR, permanent place on a historic site, forum threads still talking about it, people still clicking links, etc etc..

Not bad for a $100 investment.

I always admired the simplicity of the idea, I loved reading the haters on that thread trying to gun him down. Who had the last laugh?

Seems that guy started something else that was different, but can't remember what it was or how well it did.

The funny thing is that some of those advertisers are no longer online (especially the smaller pixel advertisers).....If you're shrewd enough, you might be able to find the owners of those sites and contact them...Offer to buy their domain name and then develop the domain or redirect to other money makers.....The possibilities are endless!

The Million Dollar site was very successful for Alex Tew. But it was not a model that others would successfully replicate. It was a short term viral success that created wealth for Alex.

It shows that no idea is stupid. All ideas have potential. Some may have an extremely short time frame for success but it exists. Be the first with an idea and you could profit from it even if the market potential is not sustainable long term.

You are about 7 years too late buddy. It's been done. An entrepreneur doesn't try and imitate ideas that were successful once 7 years ago, they try and create something even more original.

You've only got people on there because you are giving them away.

...but if you look at the Million Dollar site TODAY, then you will find:

    -shallow content
-little (almost none) original content: those pixels look original, but there is no "real content" like textual content, interactive content, videos... so just the business idea is original, but the content/services aren't
    -unreadable
    -single page
-tons of "do follow" links pointing to other sites
-high proportion of links to little original content
-lots of links pointing out to various sites that are unrelated - not focusing on niches... nothing!
    -no fresh content
    -no interaction
-probably has a bounce rate of 99 % or so...
-"time spent on site"? (not more than a few seconds, I guess!)
    -"returning visitors"? ... perhaps 1 in 1,000

Yet Google (hey Matt Cutts, tell us why!):
    -gave it Page Rank 5!

    Alexa:
-48,000 Alexa Rank (probably many webmasters are visiting it... quite a lot more than many very useful SEO blogs and other sites)

So it's overall a "trick" that still works today - for this site, at least.

Very interesting business idea, but how come it ranks so well today? According to Google's current algorithms, this site is unfairly well-rated, while so many ethical businesses get harsher treatment... Double standards?

Not really. All these years later, it's still got a high Alexa ranking. It got a ton of press while it was going. It wasn't just $1. You had to buy at least a 10x10 block, which is $100.
