You do not want to many keywords that will leave your website looking a mess. The only thing I know about is article writing and that would be keyword in the title 2 -3 times every 100 words and then the last word of the article should be your main keyword you are targeting again.

I know there is a guideline for this and I suppose it would be worthwhile to keep in mind, but honestly I have NEVER paid any attention to it when writing content for my websites.

You will also NEVER have to worry about it either if you write REAL content with a natural flow of words, structure and value for the reader.

I think you could keep to using 5-10 keywords in the keywords tag so it wouldn't look your webpage won't look too messy. Don't spend too much time on your keywords tag though, i don't think google looks at it as important now.

That is far too many. From experience, one keyword per
page is the best way to focus on your page's keyword.

Got more than one keyword? make a page for each.

        I fully agree here.

If a keyword is worth ranking for, I believe it's worth having a page for.

The maximum keyword I would recommend is 3. If you have anything more than that, it will look like keyword stuffing and will only bring your negative result

I disagree with that low number.

But let me qualify it. If the keywords appear in your content, then you can place your choice keys in the meta tag. I would keep it to less than 20.

Google ranks your keywords in your content higher than the keyword tag anyways.

Meta keywords tag has little to zero worth in SEO.

If you're asking on how many keywords to target in your content, the maximum should be three. Not because there's a specific rule, but more than 3 may dilute the message of your article. And you don't want to confuse Google what's your content is all about.
