How Do You Know Email Lists are Quality When Renting Ads on Them

Hey guys, I'm thinking of buying a solo ad/rental ad space on a targeted mailing list from places in the forum. How do you know that if someone says "Guaranteed 100 clicks" or "I have a list of 3,000 targeted in MMO" niche, that this information is actually true? Any thoughts?

By subscribing yourself for 2/3 weeks first, and seeing what you're sent? It's what I sometimes do with ezines/newsletters to which I might submit articles. One wants to have a look, first: it won't show you who the other subscribers are, but if it all looks high quality, that's obviously a huge plus? In the long run, quality newsletters/list-mailings tend to attract quality subscribers ...

Renting lists are ok. There are risks involved, so take that into account in your budget.

If you're just starting out, I would suggest to set a budget and start investing in small increments.
Document your process and stick with good ones.

There are good sources out there. Safe-Swaps.com is a good place to start, but can be expensive.

I generally only try to use lists that have been recommended by others I know and trust.
You could also do a search on google about the list or list owner.
Lastly, start out with the lowest price you can spend and do a test.
I always let people know(especially people new to all this), that even if you don't recoop your spend back right away it doesn't mean it was a failure. If you getting people to opt in to your list, there is always a chance they will buy later.

A lot of the solo ads which you get from this forum have reviews so you can get a good idea if it`s worth buying one or not

The solo ads which you can`t get reviews for, it is a bit of a risk because usually it`s because they are not that popular

That being said I have found some of my most profitable solo ads by taking a bit of a risk and trying new solo ads

Bottom line is you have to test

    Interesting, makes sense. Thanks.

When you're testing, what are you testing for? CTR? Open Rates? And before you even test, do you ask the list owners like some kind of questions or verify the list authenticity somehow?
