Craigslist Alternatives

Hi, Warriors, I wanted to share my list of Craigslist Alternative sites that I composed. I hope it would help some folks.

Cragslist.org is the original site and can be pretty good source of leads, if you know how to do it right. It has many limits and rules that are not easy to go around. There are some other sites that could be used for advertising. They are probably not as effective as Craigslist, but also can be a useful source of leads.

Craigslist Alternatives list

1) Backpage
It is very close with it's functionality to a Craigslist, it has a little bit smaller amount of people visiting it, and bigger amount of Spam and "Private offer" posts. It is still pretty big and powerful site that could be the biggest Cragslist alternative

2) Ebay Classifieds (Also known as Kijiji)
Ebay decided to do something with the competition (think Craigslist) and decided to get another similar site. US part of Kijiji was re-named to Ebay Classifieds

3) Oodle
This one can be integrated with Facebook and also has some traffic and could help somewhere if you are trying to promote your product or service.

4) Sell
It can be used as Ecommerce platform

5) USFreeads

6) Hoobly
It is not that big, but this site has about 30000 visitors a month

7) ClassifiedAds.com

8) BuySell Community

9) Gumtree (UK)
This one exists specifically for UK and is not available in other countries, but in UK this site is very important.
That is all for today.
If you know more or can get some tips about those sites, please make a comment.

Thanks for the list. BTW, Gumtree is also owned by EBay, perhaps acquired for UK audience. Another one, I was forwarded was, Ezybits. Apparently, it's pretty new so there are no restrictions on what is being posted.

I can think of two reasons:

      1. You don't target the United States; Craiglist is almost unknown outside of North America. With the exception of a few large international cities like London, almost every other (non-US) Craigslist site has nothing but tumbleweed blowing through them. In most countries, a domestic classified ads site is top dog.

      2. You do target the United States, but not one narrow, defined area.

Craigslist is the only thing that has worked for me. Everything else falls by the wayside, and i have no idea why usfreeads costs $10 a month to post a classified ad that will fall on deaf ears.

lmao, you are exactly right. It's clear as day to see what classified ad site gets the traffic, who would even go to those other ad sites?.. I think even newbies are smarter than that. Thank you, awsome point!

People who got banned by Craigslist and want to test a water in other sites. According to the feedback on this thread, some people got positive results from other sites as well.
I believe that Craigslist traffic would be the best and would give the best results, but I appreciate all comments that people left about alternative sites.

Yea craigslist works great for me. I have ads placed and make money by renewing them. Every other day. You just need to find something simple and that works..vvv

This question comes up pretty often on the forum. Some people are looking for it because the were 'blacklisted', some people just want to test the water and check if anything else would work. It is difficult to find something that provides opportunities that Craigslist offers.
I would consider Backpage as another site to try, Ebay Classified (Kijiji) and maybe Gumtree if you are working with UK market. The rest of them are smaller and I did not try them personally, just was trying to come up with any other options except Craigslist. Craigslist is the best, of course.
There are some ways you can work with Craigslist daily limits, but that would be a subject for a completely different story or thread...

What we normally do is to search for Free Ads in Google and hold the Ctrl and click on the first 10 searched and we go to the second page, do the same thing. The list gets updated unlike forum postings.

You can get some pretty decent traffic from CL and Kijiji, I didn't know that Ebay classifieds is the US version of Kijiji. Thanks for the list!

I have used some of these places before.

I know a lot of people do well with them but for me it has not worked with a few tests.

I still like pay per click, article marketing, videos, forums posting, blog commenting.

I am using couple different sites to check Site's Traffic.
My favorites are w3spy.org and Compete.com

      To: Pluto1

I took a look at Ezybits and it does not seem to have much traffic at all (about 500-600 visits a day? - that is not much to work with). I Would not advice it.

      To: eman2011
Epage looks interesting. I would check it out.

      To: ccsjohn
classifiedsforfree looks interesting and has some daily traffic (About 30k-80k daily), so it also can be a site to check.

      To: trnz
I think most of those sites are for free. Some of them have have Paid Sections to post in (like Jobs), but they are mostly free. Correct me if I am wrong here.

  • I've heard that some "moderators" on Craigslist are more strict than others. Each city has its own, and so a certain person may be responsible for certain categories. That's why you might hear of someone getting their ads ghosted on CL, whereas someone else posting the same, or similar ad, in another city on CL, may not have any problems.

    To answer Hurricane Dan's question:

statscrop.com.visualizetraffic.com - to peek at daily traffic for any site

statscrop.com - for (any) web page analysis

    I use these frequently.

backpage is working for me so far. Last week I read a post here on WF about using classified ads and one user posted a very useful video. Right now I just have a few ads posted in the St. Louis area, but it has already generated a sale and I am getting a lot more traffic. I am still waiting for my fiverr gigs to be completed for multiple listings. At any rate when I made that first sale it was at 2% conversion. 53 clicks on the first day just from St. Louis which isn't bad when you think about it.

The thing I hate about CL is the fact you can't post outside your area.

Maybe you could hire someone on Fiverr.com to post your ad for you in their area. Since a Fiverr gig is only $5, and a CL ad should stay up for at least 45 days, it seems like a pretty good deal - as long as at least one sale will cover your $5.

Also, posting on all of those others, like OLX, backpage, etc, are a good idea. Not so much that people will be browsing those sites and come across your ad, but Google could index those ads and they'll show up in the search results. And if you put your phone number or URL in the headline, people could still see it even after the ad expires, because the search results are still showing the cached ad. It may take a few weeks for it to fall off the search results. And by then, you'll have a new ad up and running.

I noticed that both ebayclassifieds as well as classifiedads.com shows up frequently in google adwords so it looks like they would be getting traffic from that. Probably best to check one's niche and see what is showing up organically to see which classified sites are doing well in the engines.

I posted some speakers and other items I had for sale on eBay Classifieds...Repeatedly.
And got zero bites, and these were high demand name brands.

And I got Google exposure on a few of the ads. I think it's just a matter of effective targeting, perhaps other types of items like info products would do better/worse?

There is no alternatives required...if you can get into CL. It's not easy to get into CL, but possible. We are posting our ads, they are not ghosting or not getting flagged. The thing is you need to know some technique that's it..................

    Backpage is a great alternative...

But with alternatives always comes CONS

the cons to any Craigslist alternative is obvious - Less Traffic

Craigslist sees over 10 million people daily where as other alternative classifieds may not see even half that audience.

here are a few alternatives that I have used in the past

    -Kijiji
    -Oodle
    -Backpage

These classifieds are ranked high on alexa but also rank high with garbage. Tons of Affiliate marketers and Merchants promoting their products.

    Hope this was a help

Eh...it's just craiglist for me. Tried backpage and though it is second best, craigslist traffic is just massive, so it's worth putting the extra effort into. I wouldn't even look at alternatives.

I mean, if you find youtube finicky do you jump to other video sites? You might but you'll also be missing out on the tremendous traffic and other perks youtube offers.

I'm just saying you have to make it work. Tweak your style to fit the site, then scale. If you do it right it's worth the extra effort.
