Do all web hosts require verification?

I successfully signed up with host gator last friday but after everything, they required some verification from me. Some scanned photo ID like driver's license or employee ID.

Do you guys know of any web hosts that does not require any type of this verification and just payment?

I just resigned so I surrendered my employee ID. My driver's license is supposed to be issued to me next year on January so I had no choice but to cancel the web hosting service from hostgator.

It depends. Usually when something seems odd or the payment details don't match, IP location is far from the address you're submitting, yes, most require verification.

I have used a couple of web hosts for my seo project which do not require verifications, such as bluehost, hawkhost, stable host, etc. Hostgator is just an exception.

HostGator is NOT an exception & it's not "unusual". When account details do not match up, they ask for verification. I know for a fact that HawkHost & StableHost do this, as do we.

I have used all the hosts you mentioned but I have never been asked to provide ID proof. However, I did use paypal as my payment choice when I signed up. I think most of the ID verification request is sent only to people signing up with a credit card.

They do when they have to or things seem odd. Big(ish) company's like that would rather not have CC fraud take place In their business.

Standard business practice when things don't seem right.

Not saying your trying to commit CC fraud OP :p

For...he he...political correctness, let's just say that some hosts do. One thing I've noticed,
though, is this tends to happen more often with hosts and prospects that are "overseas" to
one another. (e.g. Host in U.S., prospect in Asia, vice versa)

Hosts that are starting out probably...probably...won't need to do this yet. The established
ones like Hostgator, they've learned from experience why despite the inconveniences.

If you live in the US you can go to the same place you would normally get your drivers license and have them issue you a walkers permit. It may be called something else depending on where you live. It's a state issued ID and is excepted the same as a drivers license for ID purposes.

You might be able to find someone on here who has a Hostgator reseller account and wants to sell you an account through them.

Your other option is to look at some of the web hosting being offered by other Warriors. They are possibly a little more lenient with things.

Thank you all for your replies! I thought no one would reply to me anymore so I want to sleep right away.

It is unusual for me to be asked by hostgator for a photo id but I guess it's okay. For now I'm gonna try out the ones Kingfish85 mentioned.

      Whew, I really appreciate this.

I'm pretty sure that they will also ask for verification if your details don't match up or the order seems risky. Keep in mind, that us web hosts compare the distance between the address used, the payment account info & the IP location of where the order is being placed..

I've dealt with 5 webhosts, and this is the first time I hear of it. It's totally absurd to ask something like this. And, it only harasses law-abiding and decent people. I can understand very well the concern that there may be scoundrels who use stolen credit cards to put up illegal websites, causing huge problems to the people they stole the numbers from. But! This scanned ID is no proof at all. How much time would it require to make any photoshopped ID? 10 minutes? 15?

As an owner of a web hosting company, I'd like to protect my business when I sell you a server and 3 weeks down the road I get a chargeback for $150+ because I took a chance on payment information not matching the customer account that signed up. You have NO idea the amount of fraud there is in this industry.

A scanned ID, that matches an address, name, fraud verification database & payment details is sufficient...it's not as easy to fake valid ID's as you think. Every country, city, state & military ID issuer provides ID's to compare your scan against. A competent business owner that's been in this industry long enough can spot a fake & fraudulent signup a mile away.

EDIT: Would you want your data/websites etc that you use to make a living to be with a company that could care less or slacks? I know I wouldn't.

You're right of course--if it really works. But if you can access specimen ID-s, a potential photoshopper can also. What about their domains? The domain they host in your server is registered somewhere, and the owner's data should be possible to trace. On criminal charges the authorities should be able to get the data even if it's private whois.

Scammers operate on a day to day basis mostly, registering a domain name with fake credentials (or someone else's), buying hosting with stolen cards, setup a phoney Web site (Canadian Pharmacies are good ones!), scam and score a heap of card numbers and details then disappear, only to do it all again.

It's too easy to register a domain name. That's where the ID proof should start, IMHO.

  • Hmmm, when I signed up with Hostgator years ago, I did not need to do any verification. But, I was not overseas, and my credit card matched my home address and my geographical IP address. Maybe that's why, or maybe they've tightened up the registration process now.

I recall a small hosting company, back in 2004 or 2005 wanted me to email or fax them scans of my ID.

I almost hate to recommend GVO from Joel Therien, but they're also a Cpanel host, like Hostgator and (at least when I used them), had similar packages. I used them as a backup host, and even put a few primary websites on their servers using my Reseller account. Every once in a while, I'd notice all of my websites were down. I had no idea if they were down for a matter of minutes, hours, days, etc. There was no phone number to call, so I had to send in a support ticket. Usually within an hour, they'd get the sites back up, apologize, give me some reason using technical jargon as to why the sites were down, and I'd be fine until the next time my sites went down. That's when I left them and just kept Hostgator as my one and only host. Aside from that, GVO was fine, and maybe they've fixed their issues now. I went with them because they were supposed to be the "Internet Marketers" hosting company. At one time, guru Mike Filsaime recommended them. They're supposed to be more tolerant of spamming complaints from overzealous affiliate marketers, which seems like a good thing. And they didn't ask for scans of ID when I signed up. Then again, it's been a few years since I signed up for hosting. Been with Hostgator for ages now.

Sometimes it trace your IP to check whether it's a fraudulent order or not so it depends actually.

Yea some of them are not. But 4goodhosting.com requires verification because they are giving free domain when you subscribe. They will approve to give you .ca domain if you are living in Canada.
