Kindle Fiction Covers. To Fiverr or Not?

Seeing a lot of posts about art and design for ebook covers (and design in general), where the stock answer seems to be 'get your cover design at fiverr'. The same holds true with banners and other important 'business fascias'.

For IM ebooks and the such, I can kind of get it.. but what about Fiction authors on the Kindle platform; do you guys always go for the cheapest option humanly possible? How much bearing does a well-designed cover have on your sales? How do you deal with complex character designs or concept driven illustration?

Looking forward to hearing anyones thoughts on this topic.

I have a friend of mine who has published many ebooks on Amazon and it looks like it doesn't depend so much about your cover on Amazon, by the way another thing that make you decide about whether or not buying from some high-quality designer is of course your budget, so make sure that you have enough money needed to take action

Thanks Zack. What niche was your friend publishing in?

Sounds like a true authority - bet he sells mainly on the strength of his name

HECK NO!!! I wouldn't use a Fiverr cover if it was free or someone even paid me to use it. 99 out of 100 times you will get illegal images with copyright issues that could get you sued and/or get your Amazon account banned.

Fiverr is ok for some things but I'd never ever use it for book covers or graphics.

hahaha, well put mate! You also covered some aspects that I hadn't factored - illegitimate stock use etc.

It's good to know there are some folks out there who still value good design

I agree, I've never found a fiverr gig for ecovers that was even half decent in my view.

If you want an e-cover done from Fiverr, tell the designer exactly what you want, and what you dont want. And just tell them that you dont want any copyrighted images. They'll do it right for you... at least my guy does for me.

Thanks for the feedback Randall.. Im not on the hunt for a cover myself, Im feeling out the market - particularly those in the Kindle Fiction niche.

With less being done in the music arena (where I used to make $$$), Ive found lots more work coming through in publishing (offline and offline) over the past year.

I went through about four or five different gigs trying to find an artistic and creative designer to make my fiction kindle cover. I've found a good one now (That also does book trailers) but I had to spend some money finding the right guy. For me, I've found it better to buy my own stock image and then give to the designer with the text I have written and have him artistically "hook it up"

Fiverr is just like any other outsourcing platform, you've gotta dig through mud until you find the gem. They're out there, you just have to look.

I've gotten some really good design work done on Fiverr. Here is my designer for ebook covers:

Jw12792 will design a professional and unique ebook cover or kindle cover for $5, only on fiverr.com

    Here are the guidelines I used to get my desired quality of work;

Title: How You Can Get Over Your Ex-Wife As A Man Above 40
    Author Name: Eric Whyte
    Book is for kindle
    Cover Requirements:
    -color: bright, strong, emotional impact
-contrast: black text on light background or white text on dark background
-clarity: make sure the words and images are clear
-text size: text must be large enough so you can be able to read the title in thumbnail version

The most important thing is to be specific!

    Cheers

Griffin, theDanBrown - thanks so much for your feedback.

Looks like the fiverr seller is being utilised by writers in the non-fiction / how-to niche.. I wonder if any fiction authors take the fiverr route also?

For non-fiction, Fiverr is usually fine if you provide the LEGAL images for them to use. But for fiction.... NEVER! People DO judge a fiction book by it's cover unless it's written by a well known author.

The cover can make a difference between 1 sale a week to 100 sales a day. It's well worth putting a few hundred dollars in a well designed fiction book cover.
