Unexplained spike in click-throughs...

Our first affiliate site is due to go live in the next week or so.

We're using a database feed from Webgains and have noticed a huge spike in click-throughs in the past 48 hours (500+ per day) that bears no relation to the tiny amount of visitors (<10) we've been getting during the non-promoted dev phase. No sales though.

We have just registered the site with Google webmaster tools - can this be related? Does anyone know if automated bots/scripts can cause spikes in click-throughs or are all clicks visitor-generated?

We're also talking this through with Webgains who are looking into it.

Cheers all.

Just checked yesterday Google analytics and as suspected we had 6 visitors - which in no way make up for the 500+ click throughs.

Any ideas on what can cause these click throughs would be appreciated - could they be caused by the site being spidered?
