Email list for ecommerce websites?

Hi,

Might be a dumb questions but is it a good idea to build an email list for an ecommerce website?

Would you proceed to build the list just as if you were building a list for a blog?

The reason I ask is that a lot of ecommerce website owners don't focus on list building like bloggers do, do you think that's a mistake?

Not a dumb question at all.

Building a list is always a smart thing to do. Email marketing is another traffic channel, but more importantly it allows you to ...

    a) Build authority in your marketplace
    b) Build relationships
    c) Increase sales through continual promotions to existing customers and subscribers.

Personally I think it's crucial to build an email list in an ecommerce site. My biggest regret when I had my ecommerce sites was the fact that I didn't build a list of prospects sooner....I am certain I left money on the table!

When I'd did get round to it I had a big banner on the site which invited them to join the members only discount club and directed them to a squeeze page, straight after they signed in was a 10% coupon that expired in 24 hrs...

    Did wonders for conversions!

    Hope this helps,

    Chris

    Look at what amazon do.

This is the best example of ecommerce email marketing you will find.

Assuming you're shipping physical goods you will have an order form where the person needs to give their contact details, and as you will be emailing them to say when the goods are shipped you can be sure they will have used a proper email account.

All you need to do is get your programmer to link an autoresponder to the order form, and put in a tick box that tells the customer you will be sending out follow-up marketing for related products / services.

Building email lists is very crucial in any business. You might have spent more than your profit (at least in the initial stages of business) for getting a single customer. To be successful in business, more than 80% of income should come from your existing customers. For this, you need to work towards satisfying the existing customers, make them sign up for our newsletters, etc.
