"Back Linking &/or Article Referring to" Question

Please bear with me, since I'm new to all of this, and not very 'technical'.

I've decided to start an SEO campaign based on back linking, along with some articles.

I was thinking (conventionally?) that I'd have to do so in conjunction with my own web site or, more likely, a blog. Then I noticed that:

A) some web sites containing articles from different article web sites (with high PRs, etc.) were ranking high on Google's SERPs, and

B) other web sites that appeared high on Google's SERP (often on the 1st page) for a given KW (like the network marketing company's name, for example) were for the distributor's replicated company web site.

Am I correct in assuming that I can get results that way - without using (without back linking to or, in the articles, referring to) a web site or blog that I create myself? That such an SEO/marketing strategy could work by back linking to - and referring in my articles to - a replicated web site that I have from a particular network marketing company (or for that matter, a ClickBank seller's web site)?

Thanks,
Richard
